Activities That Teach Kids About Shapes

momstown's educational theme for the month of June is shapes.  Oakville moms and kids gathered for our monthly Tales for Tots program at The Little Gym and explored all kinds of shapes.  Since our family homes are made of many different types of shapes, the momstown Oakville crowd made shape houses to explore this months theme. We used construction paper cut into multiple shapes, foam shapes, sticker shapes and plenty of glue to put our houses together. We finished our houses with markers and crayons to add special detail touches. Well done little shape builders!

As always, our Scholastic Canada book of the month compliments our theme and so Night Light by Nicholas Blechman was a perfect book to read.  The book is full of shapes that turn into fire trucks, tug boats and school buses just to name a few. Miss Emily was our lucky Scholastic Canada book winner this month- congratulations and have fun finding many more silly fun shapes!

momstown's July theme is The Desert!  Come and join us to explore this fun theme and connect with other Oakville moms.  Sign up for your free trial or buy your membership today for just $45 a year.  All one year memberships include a 12 month subscription to Today's Parent magazine!

Sprout Right Teaches momstown Oakville Moms and Babies About Nutrition

momstown Oakville's mom and baby program, Baby Basics, is a weekly program held at ellephysio designed to connect moms with babies 0 -12 months to each other, to the fabulous resources available to them and to provide them with information that is useful and informative.  We were so pleased to welcome Lianne Phillipson-Webb, founder of Sprout Right, a company that specializes in pre-conception, prenatal, and postnatal nutrition for women, as well as good food and health for the whole family to speak to Oakville moms earlier this month.

Starting to feed your baby solids can bring a lot of questions and Lianne spent lots of time giving suggestions and information to help Oakville moms make sense of all the different theories that are out there.

She also brought along several great products designed to help with easier feeding and provided many great tips for common concerns such as when do you start, what food do you start with, how much, when, how do you make it, etc.  We also had some mamas in the group that were moving beyond purees and had a whole other set of questions in terms of finger foods, choking hazards, getting kids to chew the food and more.

Packed Baby Basics event to learn from Lianne Phillipson-Webb

Sprout Right.com makes it really easy to wade through all the information and be comfortable with bringing the world of food to your babies and beyond.  They offer both private and public workshops on everything from making your own baby food, what to feed toddlers (how to avoid a picky eater!), nutrition expertise and starting your baby on solids.

And while this Baby Basics session was focused on feeding the littlest members of the family, Sprout Right also offers Family Nutrition & Meal Plans - you can get a 21 day meal plan that provides healthy balanced recipes.  No meal planning for 21 days??  Sounds like heaven to me!  They also have a Smart Kids Breakfast and Lunch Meal Plan which sounds so appealing as I will face packing lunches for my son starting in September and would love ideas on making sure I am giving him great meals that will keep him full and energized.

Their website has such a wealth of information, tips, events and sessions for all ages and stages - I was impressed with everything they have to offer.  Certainly worth a visit - click here to be direct to their site.

To find out how you can join momstown Oakville's mom and baby program, please register here.  Our classes are just $45 for a year, you can join at any time.  Your membership also includes access to all of our other monthly events, our message board and our member discounts!

I Actually Picked Up The Phone And Called A Friend

For no particular reason, I actually picked up the phone, dialed a 10 digit number and called a friend the other day just to chat.  While we were speaking, we both marvelled at the fact that we never speak on the phone anymore.  We text, we use Blackberry messenger, we communicate via Facebook and we see each other in person.  In about 10 short years I have gone from a bit of a phone-aholic to hardly using a phone at all!

Hilariously the friend I called this week has a nickname in my family of "Telephone Katie" due to the fact that we used to talk on the phone so much.  Remember when Bell Canada used to have the $20 unlimited long distance phone plan?  And remember when they used to have a bubble at the top of your bill stating how much you saved that month in long distance charges?  Well when "Telephone Katie" and I were living in different locations (I have known Katie since childhood and we also went off to university together) for the summer after our second year of university, my Bell bill used to tell me that I was saving upwards of $800 a month!!

And an earlier memory has me thinking about the hours I used to spend talking to my grade eight boyfriend on the phone after school - lying on my back on my bed, head hanging over the side so I was sort of upside down, feet up on the wall.  Not going to lie, I always thought the lip shaped phone that DJ Tanner had on Full House was very cool.  And remember having another line?  I don't think anyone has that feature anymore as phone lines aren't nearly as tied up as they used to be.

Swatch phone!  Did you have a cool phone?

I got my first cell phone in my final year of university because with five girls in the house, the phone was never free!  Fast forward to 2013 and that house would have probably not even had a land line but five handheld devices and at least a few tablet computers.

So I'm trying to think about what my kids will do to connect with their peers for hours on end when they are teenagers....constant text messaging (doesn't seem nearly as fun as hours spent on the phone) or abundant use of Twitter?  Given that my oldest won't be a teenager for nine more years (which scares me to even type that as I know it will only feel like a nano second) and the amount that has changed in the world of technology over the last ten years, I am sure they will be using something that hasn't even been invented yet.

I have to say, long phone conversations coming back would be fine in my book - probably the easiest way for Mom and Dad to do a little investigation as to what is going on (I realize now that even with the door to my room shut, my parents could for sure here snippets of conversations without much effort)...much harder to get a glimpse at texts on a handheld device!  I feel like the phone call is the new hand written letter.  When I was a kid, when you got a gift from a Grandparent or other extended family member, we had to write them a thank you note.  Now the more formal way to thank someone would be to actually pick up the phone and call them to say thanks.

And yes, writing this post has made me feel old because I have actual 'olden days' things to reminisce about and will be teaching my kids about things that they will only ever see in history books but were common place in my childhood!

momstown Oakville's Mom & Baby Program - Sing, Rattle & Read!

It always surprises me how children of any age just love music.  Momstown Oakville's Sing, Rattle & Read program is always very popular and June was no exception.  Thanks to Little Sprouts Cuts for Kids for hosting us - their vibrant birthday party room always sets the mood for lots of fun!

This mom and baby program involves some dancing, singing and movement songs, exploring instruments and reading our baby book club book of the month from Scholastic Canada.  This month the book was called 'Away We Go' which teaches basic shapes through bold designs and inventive die-cuts on every page - perfect for our theme of the month - Shapes!

One lucky momtown Oakville mom and baby always go home with a copy of the book of the month and our June winner was Olivia!

Next month we'll be taking our mom & baby Sing, Rattle & Read program outside!  If you'd like more information on how you can join momstown Oakville and participate in our 40+ events each month, click here.

Barilla Pasta Gets Momstown Oakville Kids In The Kitchen

momstown Oakville moms and kids had a great morning this week at our Junior Chef program sponsored by Barilla Canada.  The group made up a delicious meal to go along with the Barilla PLUS®  pasta we were trying out that included salads and cheese biscuits - all made by our Junior Chefs!

We had several stations set up, a salad station,  a cheese biscuit station and a craft station where each child got to make a pasta necklace (what a great fine motor activity this is!).  These were in addition to our little ones getting a chance to stir our main course, spaghetti and meatballs.

For our spaghetti, we used the new Barilla PLUS® pasta.  Each 85g serving provides 6 grams of fibre and 14 grams of high quality protein that comes from ingredients such as chickpeas, lentils and egg whites, just like those found in the Mediterranean diet and considered heart healthy choices.  Let's just say that our Oakville mamas were thrilled to learn about how much protein and fiber they could get into their little ones just by serving a kid favourite meal like spaghetti.  Barilla PLUS® is available in four different varieties including penne, rotini, spaghetti and spaghettini.  Every mom who attended the event went home with a box of Barilla PLUS® spaghetti!

momstown Oakville Junior Chefs get right into cooking!  It is so great to see them taking an interest in the food, in helping out and working together to follow a recipe (with some help of course!)

After all the hard work was done, we took our lunch outside and had a picnic.  The verdict?  The kids were proud of the work they had done and gobbled it all up showing no signs of knowing how much awesome nutrients they were getting.  Barilla has got some great summer pasta recipes too like pasta salad with cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil or rotini with fresh plum tomatoes and chevre cheese or you can visit their website for even more great meal ideas.

Special thanks to Danielle Wilson Photography for taking such great pictures!  Check out the rest of the pictures from the event on our Facebook page.

momstown Oakville has a Junior Chef event every month which is included in your yearly membership of just $45/year.  To become a momstown Oakville member, click here.

White Chocolate, Strawberry and Oatmeal Cookie Recipe for Canada Day

I found this recipe a few years ago and it has become a summer staple.  This cookie recipe uses just 1/4 cup of butter so they fit a lighter palette which is perfect for warmer weather (and bathing suit season!).  These cookies also happen to be red and white which makes them perfect for a Canada Day celebration!

What You Need:

3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup regular oats
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg
3/4 cup coarsely chopped dried strawberries (I get them at a bulk foods store)
1/3 cup white chocolate chips

What You Do:

1. Preheat oven to 350°.
2. Combine flour, oats, baking soda, and salt; stir with a whisk.
3. Place sugar and butter in the bowl of a stand mixer, beat at medium speed until well blended.
4. Add vanilla and egg, beat well.
5. Slowly add flour mixture, beating until blended.
6. Add strawberries and white chocolate chips and mix by hand just until blended.
7. Drop dough by tablespoonfuls two inches apart onto greased baking sheet.
8. Bake at 350° for 12 minutes or until lightly browned.
9. Remove from oven; cool on pan 1 minute before removing to a wire rack or plate.

Happy Father's Day - From My Kids To Their Dad

My kids are too young to actually write a note to their Dad for Father's Day but I write this from their perspective based on what I see in their eyes, their smiles and their joy.  My own two cents may be thrown in as well, as how can I not thank the guy who always seems to get the job of cleaning up various bodily fluids from two children!

  • Thank you Dad, for always giving me 'one last kiss' before bed
  • Thank you Dad, for being okay with your arm falling asleep as I take a nap on you when I am sick
  • Thank you Dad, for putting together my Lego fire station again and again and again
  • Thank you Dad, for letting me help with chores outside even though it takes you longer when I do
  • Thank you Dad, for sharing your food with me, even if it means I end up eating your whole sandwich and you don't get any at all
  • Thank you Dad, for your patience when I insist on doing up my own car seat buckle and it takes me awhile
  • Thank you Dad, for showing me how to do so many new things like using the hose sprayer, drinking from a 'big kid' water bottle, putting my clothes away and so much more
  • Thank you Dad, for taking the time to do something special with us, one on one like going for pancakes or trips to Home Depot
  • Thank you Dad, for learning to take out ponytails
  • Thank you Dad, for taking care of us when we are sick, for doing the laundry at 2 AM so we get our favourite blankets back as soon as possible
  • Thank you Dad, for all the hugs and snuggles
  • Thank you Dad, for making us feel important and loved
  • Thank you Dad, in advance, for the million other things you will do for us

It is a pleasure to watch my husband be a Father to my kids.  I feel very lucky that he not only loves his role as a Father but is an equal contributor to our parenting team.

Happy Father's Day Daddy-O (from the mouth of my two year old daughter)!

Tips For Keeping Your Kids Active And Entertained Over The Summer

With summer quickly approaching and school almost over, you’re probably looking for ways to keep your kids active and entertained this summer. If you’re lucky enough to be able to stay home with your kids over the summer months, make sure to plan a couple activities each week that are different and will keep your children engaged and away from the television.
  • Take a bike ride to a park a fair distance from home, bring and lunch and make a day of it. Pick up a friend or two on the way and create a cycling caravan!
  • You could also walk through the park and bring a book on wildlife so you can learn about the animals and plants you see.
  • The Peel/Halton region also has a multitude of conservation areas where you can go for an easy walk or a challenging hike, take advantage of the nice weather and see what’s in your backyard.

For those of you who are unable to stay home with your kids over the summer, or even for those who can, but are looking for a more structured program to keep your kids active, the Sports Training Academy is a great way to keep kids active over the summer. They offer 5 daily and weekly sport camps for children ages 2-13 including: multi-sport, hockey, golf, junior academy and gymnastics. All of their camps are a wonderful way to teach your kids new sports, keep them active and have fun this summer!

Synthetic Ice Surface

Trampoline/Tumbling Track

The Sports Training Academy prides itself on developing well-rounded athletes. The 25,000 sq ft indoor multi-sport facility comprises of a synthetic ice rink/skating treadmills, driving range/golf simulators/putting green, turfed field, fitness zone and gymnastics studio which allows athletes of all ages and stages to try their hand at a variety of sports. With everything you need under one roof, the Sports Training Academy is a one-stop shop for all of your children’s sport training needs. One child can be in the gymnastics studio learning a new tumbling routine, while another can be on the ice learning a wrist shot, or on the field perfecting their soccer dribbling skills.

Many of the programs offered at the Sports Training Academy also focus on multi-sport instruction. The after school program, Junior Academy and the Summer/PA/Winter break camps all allow child athletes to test their skills at many sports each day. At the end of the day, it is their goal that a child will go home with a desire to learn more about a new sport, or tell mom and dad how they were finally able to hit a baseball without a tee!

At the Sports Training Academy, all accomplishments are recognized and the positive reinforcement from coaches and trainers steer athletes in the direction of success. The coaches are all trained in their fields (including university or national level athletes) and each department is run by individuals who also have extensive experience competing in each sport, as well as many degrees related to their department. Coaches and teammates work together to develop the best all-round athletes.

Check out their website for more pictures and information on how to register for their programs.

Rain, Rain, Go Away - momstown Oakville Moms And Babies Sing, Rattle & Read!

It was a hot and sunny day for momstown Oakville's May Sing, Rattle & Read program so our moms and kids were thrilled to read a book that went along with our theme for the month of 'wet, wet. wet' helped them think about cooling down.

Our Scholastic Canada book of the month was  Rain, Rain, Go Away by Caroline Jayne Church.   Our Oakville babies loved their time reading and exploring instruments, singing songs, dancing, some visiting with some puppets too!

Congrats to Zoe, the winner of our Scholastic Canada book of the month!

Both Oakville moms and babies love the songs with actions and movement

Thanks again to Little Sprouts Cuts for Kids for hosting us and to all our moms and babies who came out for a fun morning.  Our theme for June is shapes and we've got another great Scholastic Canada book to give away.  Sign up now to join us and get a 12 month subscription to Today's Parent magazine with your one year momstown Oakville membership!

momstown Oakville Little Scientists Explore Shapes

momstown Oakville's theme for the month of June is shapes and so Oakville moms and kids had a really fun time exploring different shapes this morning during our Little Scientists program.  The group started off reading a book about shapes where we had to match the shape in the picture to one on a spinning wheel.

Then we played a shape matching game.  Each person got a board that had been made using six different shapes cut out of sandpaper and glued on.  There were matching shapes cut out of felt, and each child had to pick the felt colour that matched the colour of their board and then match the right shape to the right sandpaper. We talked about the different textures - rough and soft, and the sandpaper helps the felt shape stick to the board.  We traced around the sandpaper shapes with our fingers and talked about how many sides each shape had, and whether they were curvy or straight and where we might find those shapes around our houses or outside.

Next we used mini marshmallows and straws to construct our own shapes. We used the marshmallows as "glue" to glue the straws together.  It was tricky, but good practice for our little fingers.

After we used bags of goo to practice drawing the shapes we had been talking about.  We filled a plastic snack bag with hair gel, food colouring and glitter and zipped it up tight.  We laid the bag flat on the table and either used a shape cookie cutter to press into the goo to make the shape, or used our finger to draw the shape in the goo.  Each of the momstown Oakville Little Scientists got to take a bag home to practice writing numbers, letters, and more shapes.

The kids had a great time and our Oakville moms were impressed - our little ones are a bunch of smart cookies and really know their shapes!  momstown Oakville's Little Scientists program is a monthly program - just one of many included in your yearly membership for just $45 a year.  Click here to see our calendar and join in on the fun!

Yikes. Who's Ready For The Tween and Teen Years?

In the last month, I have participated in events that involved large groups of grade 7 & 8 students.  I know, sounds fun, right?  One group was pretty well behaved, lots of 'please' and 'thank yous', manageable noise levels and appreciation for the experience they were having.  Then there was the other group.  Rude, loud, ungrateful and impatient.  Why the big difference between the two groups?

I'm never going to know the answer to that as I don't know their family background, much about their school or their community but I certainly was left wondering about the differences.  The group that was not well behaved seemed to be cursed with the negative generalities of the millennial generation.  They wanted more no matter what was given to them and didn't have any appreciation for what they were given, they had a very short attention span (they asked if there was a movie they could watch during lunch...which was 20 minutes!) and they had no respect for others around them (we received complaints about their noise levels).

Obviously the alarm bells starting ringing for me since I have yet to go through this with my kids and this left me scared!  My oldest is 4 years old which means I have about another 7 or 8 years before I get to this stage.  My mom often says that she didn't find the teenage years with my siblings and I all that bad.  Must remember to pick her brain immediately to find out how this was accomplished!

Eight years is a long way away and so I have lots of time to teach my kids and to model the behaviour that will get them to be respectful, appreciative, courteous and pleasant.  But I know they are always watching and I know that there are teachable moments relating to this issue every single day.  Sigh.  Parenting is a bit of a tough gig, right?  Ha - as if this is news to anyone reading!  Its hard to picture my two little bundles of sweetness turning into grumpy, gangly tweens and teens but I know it will happen.

Even if your kids are just babies, do you ever find yourself thinking about their tween or teenage years and how you will handle those challenges?  I don't think about it a lot, but will take my recent experience as a reminder to continue to parent in a way that will help my kids be people that both they and my husband and I can be proud of.

BrightPath Oakville Early Learning & Child Care Centre - Infant Spots Now Open!

I recently had the pleasure of touring the BrightPath Oakville Early Learning & Childcare Centre located at 20 Shepherd Road - a great central location that is very close to the Oakville Go Train station.  BrightPath took over this childcare centre about a year ago and has made huge changes both aesthetically and with regards to curriculum.

Welcome to BrightPath Oakville Early Learning & Childcare Centre!

Entrance to BrightPath Oakville Childcare Centre

I sat with Siji, the Director of the centre, and she told me all about their programs and the facility.  Some top highlights for me were:
  • The centre opens at 6:45 am and closes at 6:00 pm
  • They have a cook and a commercial kitchen on site.  All food is made from scratch - no canned soups or commercial bakery snacks.  Their summer menu that I saw included great meals such as oven roasted chicken with rice and steamed veggies, sliced fresh plums and banana chunks.  They rotate their menu seasonally, all menus are certified by a Registered Dietician and they are a completely nut free facility.
  • Starting in the preschool classrooms, they follow the 'Frog Street Curriculum'  which is a play based learning program with set activities, themes and games for each day of the school year.  The goal of the curriculum is to teach the children to become active members of society in learning respect, responsibility and friendship all while igniting their potential for academic success in the future.  For an overview of what a day in the classroom might look like, please click here.
  • They take children as young as six weeks old up to 12 years (for before and after school care) and have part time options for all age groups (even infants!).  They currently have infant spots available too!
  • They are a bilingual centre and learning in two languages starts right in the infant room.

Left:  Infant Sleep Area With Individual Cribs
Right:  Infant Classroom
Left:  Large Hallways with Cubbies for Each Child
Right:  Toddler Classroom

Great outdoor space for each age group

I really encourage you to arrange a tour of this facility if you are looking for childcare.  It is bright, clean, happy and safe.  The passion and love they have for the kids and families that are a part of the centre was very evident in talking to the staff on site.

They are hosting two Open Houses in the next few weeks, please stop by to see all they have to offer!

Saturday, June 15th from 10am to 1pm
Wednesday, June 19th from 6pm to 8pm

Please call the centre at 905-844-4401 and speak with the Director, Siji Puliyodil, if you have any questions or to arrange a specific tour time.  Make sure you mention 'momstown' if you are registering your child and you'll get the $50 registration fee waived!

Spring Cleaning Your Finances - Do You Have A Will And Life Insurance?

*This is a guest post by Katelyn Aitcheson, a Financial Planner with Sun Life Financial

As I sat down to write this post last week in the frigid -2 degree weather I thought to myself how can I label this blog post “Spring Cleaning Your Finances” if I truly believe that spring (or summer for that matter) will never come!  It is a pleasure to be able to share a few ideas and insights into the world of personal finances and insurance with you. My name is Katelyn Aitcheson and I am a financial planner with Sun Life Financial.

Although insurance and finances are not the most “fun” or “sexy” topic out there it is definitely one of the most important for families. As a financial advisor/planner my role is to get you from point A to  point B as seamlessly as possible. Taking care of the uncontrollable’s first (dying prematurely, suffering a serious illness, etc) and tending to the controllable priorities second (trips to Disney, RESP’s, and purchasing a second home or cottage).

In my first post I am going to take you through the three most common questions I see every year.

1. I don't have a lot of money to leave to people, why do I need a will?

They’re called the “accumulation years,” the 20, 30, or 40 years we work and earn money. During this time we buy a home, donate to charities, dabble in stocks, buy life insurance. Whatever our assets and interests, we want them protected and passed down to good hands.

The solution is to create a will and keep it updated – not the most enjoyable of life’s task, but one of the most important. Yet about half of us don’t have a will or a power of attorney document. Bottom line, most people would agree that they would rather decide who their children should be raised by instead of having the government make that decision.  If you don't have a will, you won't get to make that decision.

2. How do you know how much life insurance you need if you have young kids? Do both parents need to be insured?

Life insurance is something you don’t buy for yourself – you buy it for the benefit of others. When should you think about buying it? Certainly, when you get married, have children or have someone dependant on your income. Then the question is: How much do you need?

A general rule of thumb is you should be covered for 10 times your annual income, so if you earn $70,000, you’d be looking at $700,000 in coverage. But every individual situation is different and should be examined as such. An advisor will help you fill out a needs analysis to determine the appropriate amount, taking into consideration your annual income, net worth, debts and existing life insurance. At the end of the day you need to be comfortable with the coverage you have.

Do both parents need to be insured? Absolutely! Even in a one income family it is important to take into consideration what the stay at home spouse brings to the family in terms of savings. Childcare can be quite expensive, if the stay at home spouse passes away there will need to be childcare put into place so the surviving spouse can continue to work. The intent of insurance is to be able to maintain the standard of living for the surviving spouse and children.

3. Saving for retirement can be confusing and overwhelming. What advice do you have for those in their 30's or 40's?

Ahhhh, the ultimate question. How much money do I need for retirement? When should I start saving? What type of plan should I be putting my money into? (RSP, TFSA, Group Pension).

Saving for retirement requires some planning and it is always best to seek advice from professionals. In general, most Canadians are not saving enough for retirement according to various reports and sources. At retirement you will have multiple sources of income (TFSA,RSP’s, CPP, OAS etc) and it is important to ensure that you have a strategy in place to make sure that you will be paying as little tax as possible.

If you are enrolled in a group RRSP or pension plan through work, chances are you are on the right path. If your plan is voluntary and you are not taking advantage of free matching money from your employer, you are missing out on a huge opportunity.

Use your Tax Free Savings account to your advantage!! In my experience most people are not taking advantage of this account. Depending on your income level this account can be more useful than an RSP.
Working with a holistic advisor that can take into consideration both your wealth goals and insurance needs will enable you to know where you are financially.

momstown Oakville's Belly Basics Event Connects And Supports Oakville's Expecting Moms

Next Belly Basics, free prenatal event, is happening on October 29th, 2013!  More details here.

Last night momstown Oakville held our first Belly Basics event at ellephysio.  It was a really successful evening and we've already received lots of positive feedback from the moms to be about how helpful the event was and how much valuable information they learned.

momstown Oakville welcomed our guests with yummy cupcakes from Cupid's Gourmet Bakery, some refreshing lemon/lime water and a very important piece of information required by all of our pregnant mamas - where the bathrooms were!  All guests also got a loot bag to take home which included great coupons from Fisher Price, Cupid's Gourmet Bakery and a gift card from Organic Baby Joy!

-Halton Doula Group

We had a great group of moms last night (we had three who were expecting twins!) and can't wait to see them all again at another momstown Oakville event.  Based on last night's success, sounds like we need to get working on planning the next Belly Basics event soon!  For more information on our next events, you can subscribe to our newsletter or sign up for your free 4 week trial with momstown Oakville.
