How To Make Summer Snowballs - Sensory Fun For Kids

One of the things that Oakville Moms love about momstown programs is that we offer tons of craft, sensory and playtime fun and we deal with all the prep and the mess!  This was certainly true last week when we decided to try out a recipe for Summer snowballs.  This was a great sensory activity for kids and although it was pretty messy, the mixture is easily washable.

All the kids just dove right in and wanted to mix our ingredients

Here is what you need to make Summer Snowballs:

-Two 16oz boxes of cornstarch
-One can plain shaving cream

Dump the cornstarch in first and then add the full can of shaving cream.  You can vary the amount of cornstarch and this will make it more or less mould-able.  Two full boxes of cornstarch will allow you to form compact snowballs.

Everyone had a lot of fun with this sensory activity.  If you are looking for more ideas for sensory fun, check out our recipes for making your own cloud dough or silly putty.  And if you'd like to join us the next time we make a great big mess (and leave you with none of the clean up!), click here to find out more about a momstown Oakville membership and our special offer from Today's Parent magazine.

momstown Oakville Moms And Kids Cook Up Dinner With Chef Boyardee!

momstown Oakville moms and kids got together one late afternoon this week for a special Junior Chef with Chef Boyardee. Meal time with a busy family can be tricky and it was great to make some recipes that make meal time easier for the whole family by providing quick options!  For this event we tried Chef Pizza-roni Skillet and Ravioli Lasagna. With no preservatives, Chef Boyardee is a great kitchen staple to use as a base to make many different delicious meals.  Have you ever thought of combining Chef Boyardee with different protein options, veggies and cheese for kid approved yummy results?

Each child got one of these adorable aprons!
We divide up the jobs and got kids ripping spinach, helping to chop yellow and green pepper, measure out the cheese and even open the cans of Chef Boyardee.  All of the moms were loving the fact that their kids kept sneaking pieces of  peppers as we cooked!  This is a fabulous bonus of having kids help you in the kitchen.

The kids loved hearing what step was next as we worked together to build two delicious meals and we chatted about the foods that we were using.  A common comment from participating Moms was "I never thought of using Chef Boyardee this way but love how quick and easy this can be!"

And after lots of chatter and excitement during cooking time, we were then met with silence around the table as the kids sat down to gobble up the tasty dinner they had made.

Here is the recipe for the Ravioli Lasagna, a great way to add protein and calcium into meal time:

Ingredients
2 cans (2 x 425 g) Chef Boyardee® Mini Ravioli®
1 cup (250 mL) finely chopped spinach
2 cups (500 mL) grated Mozzarella cheese, separated into 1 cup (250 mL) portions
1 cup (250 mL) 2% cottage cheese or Ricotta cheese
1 teaspoon (5 mL) Italian seasoning

Directions
1. Spray 8" square or round baking pan with PAM®.
2. Spread one can of pasta on the bottom of the baking pan. Place chopped spinach in a glass bowl and microwave for 10 seconds; drain. Spread spinach over pasta and top with cottage or Ricotta cheese, 1 cup (250 mL) Mozzarella cheese and ½ teaspoon (2.5 mL) Italian seasoning.
3. Layer second can of pasta. Top with remaining Mozzarella and Italian seasoning.
4. Bake at 400°F for 20-25 minutes or until heated through. Allow 10 minutes to stand before serving.

Oakville moms and kids went home with full tummies (and that meant Mom didn't have to make dinner or do dishes) and goodies too!  Each child received a very cute Chef Boyardee apron and Mom went home with two cans of Chef Boyardee to use at home and a can of PAM cooking spray.

Make sure you check out the Chef Boyardee Facebook page and the recipe section of their website for more great meal ideas.

Why Running As A Team Can Help You Achieve Your Goals For The CIBC Run For The Cure

Whether you've already registered for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's CIBC Run For The Cure event or not (what are you waiting for - click here!), I hope you've been able to join a team or plan on recruiting some friends or family to participate with you.

Register now!
Here are my top five reasons why you need a team:

5.  If you registered your team of 10+ by September 20, you get team t-shirts!  If you missed that deadline, you’ll still get a 2013 t-shirt.  As I mentioned here, I got a t-shirt last year and it makes me proud to wear it.
4.  Things are always more fun when you are doing it with friends.
3.  Healthy competition!  Your team will push you to fundraise just a little bit more, run just a bit faster or        stop you from walking the last 0.25km when you've already come so far.
2.  More people on your team means more people taking the time to do something good for themselves.  Leading an active lifestyle is one of the ways we can prevent cancer.
1. Frankly, the more people we have supporting and raising awareness and funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, the better.  1 in 9 women is expected to develop breast cancer in her life time.

Did you know that you can even register a team on the day of the event?  There is still lots of time to get some people together and do your part to create a future without breast cancer!

When the momstown Oakville team ran last year, we were a group of women who all had many different reasons to run and were at various stages in our lives.  Some brought their little ones in strollers, some walked the route, some were running for a 5km personal best time, and some (like me) were doing it in an effort to challenge myself and to start to make time for fitness again after having two children in the last few years.  Some had lost a family member to cancer, some were supporting a loved currently living with the disease and all of us were running to reduce the number of women that ever have to say 'I have breast cancer'.

So, who's making the list of people you are going to reach out to with an invitation to join you on Sunday, October 6th for the CIBC Run for the Cure?

momstown Oakville's New Programs for Toddlers and Sensory Play

As momstown Oakville continues to grow and welcomes more and more Oakville moms and kids, we are pleased to be adding more fun programs for our members to participate in.  This past week we kicked off our new Toddler Time program (perfect for that 10 - 30  month age group) as well as a Sensory and Discovery event that we plan to have outside each month (yup, even in the winter!).  Both new programs will be offered each month, sometimes on weekdays and sometimes on weekends.  Check our calendar to when these events are happening next!

Toddler Time

Circle Time

Our Oakville moms and toddlers gathered at Canlan Ice Sports to spend a hour being busy and burn off some of that toddler energy!  The event included:

  • A toys table--shape sorters, block stacking, nesting blocks, magnetic alphabet, and pom pom colour sorting
  • An art station where there were apple shapes for colouring, we used scribble cookies and chalk
  • Sound station, toddlers tried to match sounds using their hearing sense
  • A floor toys area we had vehicles and a playmat
  • A sensory station that had shredded paper and hiding inside were pumpkins, apples and  leaves
  • A gross motor area where there was a pretend vacuum,  tunnel and beachball

After play time, the event ended with circle time.  We sang songs that matched our theme of the month, 'apples', such as "1 little 2 little 3 little apples" and "Apples on the apple tree"

Sensory Discovery

Leaf Rubbings

This event was held outside on a weekend and we had moms, dads and kids of all ages join us.  Here's what kept the group busy:

  • Marble painting: Take a plastic Rubbermaid box, add an apple cutout, a few marbles and drops of paint. Then shake the box to distribute the colour. The kids loved hearing the sound of the marbles rolling around and seeing the new colours made from the marble tracks.
  • Make a Leaf Person: Each child could create their own leaf person using leaves of various sizes, twigs, googly eyes, and coloured sequins.
  • Leaf Rubbings using scribble cookies.   Find out how to make your own scribble cookies here.
  • Mystery box.  This was a shoe box wrapped in paper with a hole in the side just big enough to fit a child's arm. The kids had to guess what was inside only using their sense of touch. They loved trying to guess! Inside the box was a leaf, rock, mini pumpkin, apple, pinecone, and a flower.

We invite you to join in on all the fun!  momstown Oakville membership is just $45 a year and includes all these great events and so much more.  Click here to purchase your one year membership which also includes a 12 month subscription to Today's Parent magazine.  Oh, and did I mention that in addition to having lots of fun, you may just end up with a bunch of new friends too?  Hope to see you soon.

How Miley Cyrus Won And Lost All At The Same Time

I saw the news today that Miley Cyrus' new song is number one on the Billboard charts.  Huh.  Am pretty sure that just affirmed for her that her raunchy performance on the recent VMA's was a good thing to do. Let's review....bad behaviour = good outcome.  These are not the lessons I want my kids to learn but there are millions of kids (teens only hopefully) around the world who saw that performance and now see that her career is being rewarded.  Add Miley to the group of young woman who have achieved success based on baring their bodies and pushing the envelope when it comes to sexual behaviour.  I don't even have to list them here - you all know who they are.

So score one for Miley.  At least in her mind anyway.  After I heard about her Billboard success today, I googled her recent video for her new song, "Wrecking Ball".  Uhhhh....whoa.  She is doing provocative moves with a sledgehammer (that famous tongue of hers makes another appearance) and is naked through most of the video.  What the what??  Honestly, I only watched half of it and had to turn it off.  I just shook my head in sadness and honestly, in disgust.  How can she think that this is a good presentation of who she is?

And so the title of this blog post was born.  Technically I guess she won - she's got a number one hit, she's all over social media, I guess she has a lot to celebrate.  But eventually she will see this as a loss.  My fear is that it may be too late.  It will be after people stop talking about her, after the 'yes people' that are surrounding her move on to the next big thing, after she is left with no foundation or safe place to land. Media have already put out stories that she is the 'next meltdown waiting to happen', following in the recent footsteps of Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes.  And the same common question is appearing in the media...where are her parents?  I know she is 20 years old so I guess that questions should be 'where were her parents' in those foundation building years to teach this girl self worth and self confidence?

With reports saying that most kids say they want to be famous when they grow up, Miley Cyrus's success is scary for a parents.  This is who kids will be looking up to for career ambitions?  I hope not. The only silver lining (although not for these Hollywood starlets) is that the rate at which the downward spirals of young stars is occuring is only picking up speed.  And while I feel for their parents, and their families, I hope that everyday youth will begin to see that they fame they think they want is nothing like it really seems.

DIY: How To Make Scribble Cookies For Kids

At the momstown Oakville Sensory event over the weekend, we used Scribble Cookies to do leaf rubbings and they were a hit.  Moms, Dads and kids loved them!  There were so many questions about how to make them, a blog post seemed to be in order.  This recipe comes from Amanda, an Event Coordinator on the momstown Oakville team.

Getting ready to bake the Scribble Cookies

Directions To Make Scribble Cookies

1. Peel paper off old crayons, break into small bits (you can use multi colours but shades of one colour provides the best result).  This is a great way to use up broken crayons and the little pieces at the bottom of the crayon container!
2. Put each colour in a muffin tin double lined with paper liners
3. Bake at 350F degrees until melted (watch closely they don't take long to melt!)
4. Once melted, put directly in the freezer to solidify (keep them in the pan).
5. Once solid, peel liners off and voila, scribble cookies!

Cooking With Kids: Mini Apple Pies Recipe

Not only did momstown Oakville get a group of Junior Chefs together last week, but they were Junior Pastry Chefs!  Our theme of the month is apples and so apple pie was a natural choice for our cooking with kids program.  But since momstown's Junior Chef program likes to give kids the chance to participate as much as possible, this mini apple pie recipe was a better fit than just one big pie.  Oakville kids were rolling and cutting out dough, peeling and cutting apples and having a great time.

This recipe was a big hit! Here is what you need to make your own Mini Apple Pies at home.

Ingredients:

3 large granny smith apples
1/2 cup + 1tbsp all purpose flour
1 cup of sugar
2 teaspoons of cinnamon
3 tablespoons of chilled butter cut into 18 equal pieces
2 boxes of tender flake puff pastry (found in the freezer section). Make sure you thaw it in the fridge overnight.

What You Do:

1. Preheat oven to 400F and generously grease a regular size muffin pan with butter.
2. Mix together the cinnamon and flour in a small bowl.
3. Peel and cut apples to into small pieces.
4. Pour the sugar over the apples, then the cinnamon flour mixture. Mix well.
5. Use a rolling pin to roll out the puff pastry and cut 12 circles with a mason jar lid or drinking glass
6. Use fun cookie cutter shapes to cut from the remaining crust, these will top the pies
7. Line the muffin pan with the cut out pastry circles.
8. Fill each muffin tin with a small spoonful of apples.
9. Lay a piece of butter on each pie and cover with the cut out shapes.
10. Bake for 14-16 minutes.

When You Have To Be 'That Mom'

Whether you've already experience this or not, there will come a point in your parenting life when you are going to need to be 'that mom'.  You know, the one people think is over reacting or being too cautious or too assertive.  The one that won't stop fighting for something that may be right for their child even though its not easy for others to understand or easy for others to do.  At some point, every mom is going to have their turn at being 'that mom'.  Food allergies, academic or behaviour challenges, developmental challenges, health challenges...the list is long when it comes to things that moms will become advocates for if it means protecting, helping or improving the lives of their children.

But here is the tricky part.  While your gut may be telling you, screaming at you, that you have every right to speak up, push and demand answers, there will always be some part of you that wonders if you are being too unreasonable, to pushy, or bordering on the status of helicopter parent.  I guess self doubt is just a typical feeling, something that is hard to shut out 100%, but I think its also because during the time when you've got your back up, you can't help but notice that other moms don't have to fight the same fights.  That is a catalyst for self doubt too.  Your gut is never wrong though, and most moms know that, even if sometimes they don't realize it until after a situation has transpired.  Haven't you ever said "I knew I should have..."?

Next time a friend is telling you about a situation they are dealing with where they have to advocate for their kids, just offer your support.  It doesn't feel good to be 'that mom'.  It doesn't feel good to feel like no one is on the same page when it comes to what is best for your kids or that you aren't being taken seriously.  And as we all go through the prime parenting years (its a lot of years!), every mom will have to face the feeling of being 'that mom' at some point.  All I can say is that you should trust yourself.  Being outside your comfort zone is tough, but you will never regret fighting to make sure your child gets what they need.

This time of year is ripe with advocacy situations as we all settle into new routines, new schools and new teachers.  Go easy on yourself!  There is lots of talk about how the kids are adjusting to the new school year, but that doesn't mean the adjustment isn't just as hard for you.

Tales for Tots: Exploring Apples With Oakville Moms & Kids

momstown Oakville's monthly Tales for Tots program welcomed lots of Oakville moms and kids this week at The Little Gym to explore our theme of the month - apples.  Our craft got the kids glueing and letting the creativity flow with the creation of their own tissue paper apple.

We used paper plates as the apple base. Red tissue squares to fill in the apple, green construction paper for leaves and brown card board for the stem- an easy, adorable apple craft for kids! After our apple crafting fun we sat down to read a wonderful story called Fox and Squirrel. The book is all about appreciating differences in others. Since September is also back to school month, this story was very fitting as there is so many new people at school to get to know and each of us are unique.  As always, we gave away a copy of our Scholastic Canada book to one lucky Oakville mom.  Congratulations to Melissa and her daughter Emily, they were the big winners this month.

Every month we give away a Scholastic Canada book at our Tales for Tots and our Rhyme, Rhythm and Read program.  Come and join us next time!  Click here to purchase your one year membership for just $45. Membership includes all of our programs, a 12 month subscription to Today's Parent magazine and so much more!

Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run For The Cure Needs Your Support

On Sunday, October 6th the annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run For The Cure will be taking place in communities across Canada.  Last year was my first time participating.  I'd recently had a momstown colleague diagnosed with breast cancer and our momstown community rallied together to run for her and the many other women affected by this disease.

When someone you know is diagnosed with breast cancer you can't help but have the 'what if that were me' thoughts float through your mind.  Who would be there to help?  How would I explain things to my kids (even writing that sentence made my stomach drop)?  Research suggests that one in nine women is expected to develop breast cancer in her lifetime.  That is not a great statistic. Its time we all do our part to change the negative impact that breast cancer is having on the lives of women, men, children and families.

So what can you do to make a difference?

  • Make sure to visit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run For The Cure website and get the details of the event in your community.
  • Register for the event.. There is a 1KM and a 5KM option and many people we saw last year did it as a family with little ones in strollers.  What a great, active way to spend a morning as a family!
  • Make a team and then recruit friends, extended family, co-workers and neighbours to join you.  All teams with the minimum of 10 people will qualify for a t-shirt printed with your personalized team name.  I wear my t-shirt from last year frequently and it reminds of my 5KM race accomplishment (was my first!) and of how it important it is to continue to support this cause that can make such a positive difference in the lives of women.
The run is about 5 weeks away which is still lots of time to train and prepare.  There are lots of great 5KM training resources online or visit the Running Room website for tips.  You can do it!

momstown Oakville's 2012 Run For The Cure Team
If you aren't able to participate in the run, there are still lots of other ways you can help.  To find out more about volunteering for the event, click here.  Ask around to find out if you have friends or family participation and make a donation to support them!  And finally, head down to the event on Sunday, October 6th and cheer on those who are running.  It was very motivating to have people with signs cheering and encouraging us as we ran the route last year, especially when we only had a 1KM to go and were feeling tired.  The community really came together and it was inspiring to see.

Women seem to have a really hard time putting themselves first (guilty!) and participating in this event is another step in the right direction for making healthy living a priority.  Exercise makes you feel good on so many levels (and is one of the key ways to reduce your risk of breast cancer) and how great would it be for your kids to see you run across that finish line?  And of course, as we band together to support those who have experienced breast cancer or are currently living with the disease, make sure you are regularly doing self breast examinations and are regularly being checked by a doctor. If you are in your forties, nearing them, or 50+  and not currently being screened for breast cancer, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation encourages you to learn about your breast health, breast cancer risk, ways to reduce your risk, and the benefits and limitations of breast cancer screening.  Please visit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation website for more information and be sure to visit their Facebook page and follow them on Twitter to join the conversation about women's health and breast cancer.

Mark the date for Sunday, October 6th and help wipe out breast cancer!

Apple Wreath Craft For Kids

Momstown's theme of the month for September is 'Apples'.  So far, Oakville moms and kids are loving this theme as there are so many fun Fall things to do that involve apples!  At our momstown Monet program this week, we got together to make festive apple wreaths.  This craft was so much fun as it involved apple stamping, as well as cutting and gluing too.

Apple Wreath Craft
Here is what you need to make your own apple wreath:

-green pipe cleaner
-large white paper plate
-green construction paper
-brown crayon or paint
-white paper
-red paint
-apples
-scissors
-glue

Steps to make the apple wreath:

1.  Cut out the middle of the paper plate so the remainder is a wreath shape
2.  Colour the back side of the paper plate ring using brown crayon or paint it with brown paint
3.  Cut an apple in half and paint the halfs red.  Stamp 7 good apple stamps onto the white paper and leave the paper to dry
4.  Put a small hole in the top and put the pipe cleaner through making a circle so you can use this to hang the wreath.
5.  Take the green construction paper and cut out stems for the apples
6. When the apple stamps are dry, cut them out.
7.  Glue the apples onto the brown paper plate ring and then glue the green apple stems on to the apples

Hang this cute creation in our outside your house to help celebrate the arrival of the Fall season!  Join us for our next momstown Monet program or one of the other 40+ events we have on our calendar each month.  A yearly membership is just $45 a year and includes a 12 month Today's Parent magazine subscription!

Tips For Running Your First 10KM Race

On Sunday, September 22nd I will be running my first 10km race as part of the Oakville Half Marathon. And before you listen to the voices in your head that say "I could never run a 10km race", just hear me out because you can run a 10km race too.  It all started in the Spring when my sister and I were lamenting over the lack of exercise we had been doing and wanting to make a change.  A few days later she called me up and said, I think I might sign up for a race as it would give me something to work towards.  My response?  Great idea!  She found a 10km race in Oakville that was in September, several months away so that we'd have time to train, and we both signed up as did a few other mamas I know.  Am I a runner?  No.  Have I ever done a race before?  One.  The 5km Run For The Cure in Burlington last year with not one pre-run completed before race day (not something I would recommend!).

momstown Oakville's 2012 Run for the Cure team

We're now only three weeks away from the big race and here is what I have learned and what I wanted to share with others who may be even remotely thinking about doing the same thing.

1.  My sister had a good idea, signing up for a race makes a big difference.  I never would be running as far as I am if I wasn't signed up for a race.  Once you sign up for the race, chances are you will tell people that you signed up and this is another factor in making sure you do it!  Race day is also fun - people cheering you on, maybe a t-shirt or a race bib, and usually some free snacks at the end.  I got a t-shirt when I did the 5km race and every time I pull it out of my drawer I still feel good that I did the race.

2.  Find a running buddy.  Without my running buddy I never would have run as often or as far as we have (thanks Nora!). We chat during our runs and naturally, you will push yourself more if you are running with another person. She says I improve her pace and she pushes me to do longer distances.

3. Keep it realistic.  There are lots of options for training such as signing up for a running clinic, doing an online program or just setting your own weekly goals.  Don't join a running group that commits you to 4 nights a week if there is no way that you will get there.  It will discourage you.  As a mom with young kids, its a constant battle to make time for myself to exercise so I have been running 1-2 a week, slowly increasing the distance.  We've also been running what is knows as 10 & 1's meaning we run for 10 minutes and walk for a minute.  In my head I always tell myself that I was in labour for longer than 10 minutes so I can certainly get through 10 minutes of running if I birthed two children!

4.  Try and enjoy it, but no pressure.  Not going to lie, losing weight is a nice by product of exercise but don't make it the sole reason that you commit to doing a race.  You may lose weight, you may not, depending on if you change your diet or how often you are running.  Remember that making an exercise program a priority is an improvement in your life if you haven't been doing that before.  You are also setting a good example for your kids, improving your overall health and wellness.  I have also enjoyed seeing different neighbourhoods during the course of our runs and now that the leaves are starting to change, the scenery is getting even better.

5.  Evaluate.  Overall, have I enjoyed training for this race?  Sort of.  I have enjoyed seeing my friend more often as we've been running together once a week.  I have enjoyed feeling my muscles work, accomplishing new things and challenging myself, but I don't think long distance running is for me.  I just don't enjoy it that much.  I've never gotten the runners high or felt like I could run for hours (apparently this really does happen to some people!).  I think a perfect race for me would be 8km and I'd rather work on getting faster for a shorter race than aiming for longer distances.  I have learned that there are tons of different types of races like mud runs, runs with obstacle courses, etc and I think these might be more my style.  I need to change things up so am also thinking about a mini triathalon as I think I would enjoy it more. The running has made me think about what type of activity I do like and has reminded me how much I enjoy playing team sports like soccer or hockey so I am trying to work that into the rest of my year.

So, after all that, have I convinced you that you too can run a 10km race?  You can, I promise you, you can. I encourage you to push yourself towards a fitness challenge that might be a bit of a stretch.  My guess is you'll surprise yourself just like my fellow momstown Edmonton mamas did when they signed up for a half marathon!  Read more about their journey here.  It's pretty incredible what you can accomplish when you push yourself outside your comfort zone.  Stay tuned for my post race blog post and wish me luck!

No Tears For This First Time Kindergarten Mom

My son starts Junior Kindergarten this week.  Its a gradual entry, so in my mind, he doesn't officially start until next week as his first full day won't be until then.  This time of year you see lots of blog posts, articles and media about sending kids off to school for the first time and the tears that may come from mom and/or dad. Last weekend my mother in law told me she bawled when my husband went off to kindergarten. Maybe the tears will hit me later, but right now I am so excited and so proud of my son, the tears are no where to be found.

My son, just one day old

My little boy is a sweet and social kid.  He's been in daycare so he's used to being in a group of kids, used to following instructions and being away from his parents.  I know he'll be a bit timid going to a new school and the transition will be hard as he leaves the daycare friends he's had for the past three years. But I also know that in a month or two he'll have new friends and thrive learning so many new things and getting more and more chances to be a big kid.  And that makes me so proud.  Proud that over the past four years we've done what we needed to do to get him ready for this next step.  Proud that he gets so excited over new accomplishments whether its learning the monkey bars or holding a pencil correctly or jumping higher than he could before.  Excited that he will continue to learn social skills like compassion, kindness and respect. Even the tough moments that he will face such as disappointment, losing and being left out are opportunities for him to grow and to learn that he can choose his reactions to those moments.  These are key moments in life and they shape the person you become.  I am here for him to navigate these challenges and help him thrive in spite of them.

I look at him and just can't help but be excited to see what he will continue to grow up to be.  To watch his interests grow and knowledge increase and his life become bigger as he starts school.  I guess there is a bit of sadness too, but its such a pleasure to watch this kid grow.  I've got a smile planted on my face and I watch with pride as my baby continues to surprise me, make me laugh and amaze me with the person he continues to become.  Looking forward to a great school year ahead!
