momstown Oakville's Holiday Project: Giving Back to our Community

Every year my family chooses one holiday project that focuses on giving back to others in the Halton community.  I have a book that I record the project in each year and as my kids get older, they will be involved in choosing what charity or program we will support.  I also hope that as they get older, they will enjoy looking back through the book to see where we have contributed and that it will help to instill within them the desire to volunteer or contribute in some way to those who need assistance.

This year, momstown Oakville moms will also be participating in a holiday project.  We are currently collecting items for our baskets as part of The Basketeers.  The Basketeers was started by a woman who was supporting women's shelters with a group of friends.  The shelter's told them that it was fairly easy to find groups willing to buy or sponsor Christmas gifts for children, but their mothers seemed to have been
forgotten. They felt that by supporting the mothers, they will find the strength to create new lives for
themselves and their children and not return to the abuser and will feel stronger for their children.
That is why the group was created. In 2000 they started with 14 baskets and in 2011 the group supported 39 women's shelters in southwestern Ontario with a total of 1685 beautifully wrapped baskets!

I can't imagine being in a position where I could not provide a safe and secure environment for my child.  Women that escape abusive relationships are incredibly brave and the work that The Basketeers is doing provides an amazing opportunity for them to start to rebuild their lives, their self confidence and their self worth.  I dropped off a basket last year and it was a very heartwarming and emotional experience.  There were so many beautiful baskets but what really inspired me was the notes of support and love that were attached on the outside for the recipient to read.

I'll be sure to post some pictures of our finished baskets!  A huge thank you to all of our generous momstown Oakville members for participating in this worthy project.
