Art & Play: Baby Animals

momstown Oakville hosts our monthly Art & Play at Dazzle Art in Oakville.

This gives the kids a great chance to run and explore at the Dazzle facility, and we also have a craft that goes along with our monthly education curriculum.  This month was all about baby animals.  Our kids were thrilled with an activity geared to a wide age range.  We had mama and baby animals, the kids could color and decorate the animals any way they wanted.  They could then match the mamas and the babies together.  This was a great activity for pre-schoolers!  One of my kids who is 5 took the activity a step further, cutting out all the animals.  We placed them face down and created our own game of memory matching the babies and the mamas together!

Sherri from Circle Time Parties was also with us to host our circle time and parachute games!  Thanks Sherri!  The kids LOVED it!

Dazzle has also provided us with a wonderful space to run and play during this crazy cold spring we are having!  We will be moving our monthly Art & Play event outside to the parks during the warm summer months where we will continue to do crafts, and have playtime outdoors digging in the sand, and running at the park.

If you are interested in other "baby animal" themed crafts, check out momstown art & crafts.  For a FREE 4 week trial at momstown Oakville, register here!

The best steak marinade

Who's excited for BBQ season?  Me!  Do you have favourite recipes that you make time and time again?  When we got a new BBQ a few years ago, we also got a recipe book as part of the purchase.  It has really great tips on cooking time and how to get the nice criss-crosses on the meat or chicken you are grilling (my husband always likes to try for perfect criss crosses!) but also has some amazing recipes.  Our favourite recipe has to be the steak marinade.  We've made it for guests several times and it always gets rave reviews.

Ingredients

2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoons minced garlic
Salt and pepper to taste

This makes enough marinade for 4 small steaks, but the recipe can easily be doubled. Combine all ingredients into a large ziploc bag or container and add steaks.  Marinade for at least 2 hours, up to a maximum of 24 hours.

The marinade is really flavourful but not overpowering and would pair well with any of your favourite side dishes.  Complete the meal with a glass of red wine - may I suggest the 2009 Mapema Malbec.  Sounds like a perfect meal to me...in fact writing this post has inspired me - I'm off to call a few friends to come over for a BBQ feast!

Animal Crackers!

Our Junior Chef program is hosted by Sherri from Circle Time Parties, and she follows along with our momstown education curriculum.  Our theme for the month of April has been all about baby animals, so our moms and kids were super excited to learn that they would make their very own animal crackers this morning!

They worked as a team to create the dough, each child taking a turn to add an ingredient, and stir. Then each child was given some dough and they used cookie cutters to cut out bunnies, chicks, bears, and so many other adorable little animals.

While the creations were baking, Sherri led us in a circle time, of course all about baby animals!  We sang songs about frogs and read books about animals too! Everyone agreed that tasting the little animals was yummy AND fun! Thank you Sherri from Circle Time Parties!

Looking for some great recipes to try at home with your kids?  Check out momstown meals for some inspiration.

The evolution of the cottage weekend

We spent the weekend at my husband's family cottage.  It's winterized so we are able to enjoy it all year round.  I was marvelling with my husband last night at how our cottage weekends have evolved over the last four years.

Before kids we rarely went up to the cottage just the two of us.  We did a few times, but I know we both were bored by the end of the weekend.  There is no internet up there, there is satellite TV which gets you a lot of Dallas, Who's the Boss or Full House reruns and the closest movie theatre is about 40 minutes away.  It was nice to be there for the weekend, but we were ready to go home by Sunday for sure.

We very often brought friends up with us though, and those weekends were lots of fun! We actually had cocktail hour (this may have been inspired by the reruns of Dallas mentioned above). I always got adventurous in the kitchen, trying new recipes, and we'd linger at the dinner table after having enjoyed appetizers, a main course and dessert. More drinks followed in the living room once the meal was over. We'd stay up late and sleep in the next morning.

My in-laws also let me take over the cottage for girls weekends!  I hosted my book club there once, had two bachelorette parties and a few other girls weekends - just because. The most important factors in these weekends were who was bringing what magazines to read, and what snacks and drinks were we going to have.  We'd divide up the meals and cook up some amazing food, swim, read, suntan and usually even get in a run or a walk or yoga on the deck.  We'd stay up too late and sleep in the next morning.

Yes, for some reason, we actually took pictures of our snacks!
Now we are a family of four who uses the cottage in a very different way.  Today we spent the day looking for good sticks, throwing rocks in the lake and seeing how many froggy jumps we could do in a row across the front lawn.  My in-laws live down the road from the cottage, on a farm, and my son is just enthralled with his Grandfather and is treated to multiple tractor rides each day.  He also loves playing with the Tonka trucks that have been kept in the attic since my husband was a kid.

We certainly don't have cocktail hour at the cottage these days, but enjoy a drink together once the kids are in bed instead.  We aren't bored by the fact that there isn't any internet, but go to bed early for some much needed rest or even catch a nap in the afternoon.  We love that the chores from home are left behind and that we focus on the kids and just play with them as much as they'll let us.  We still invite friends up, but they bring their kids too, and we head out to local zoos instead of golf courses or ice cream parlours instead of late night drinks in the closest town.

What a difference a few years makes - now we go to bed early and are up early!  I laugh out loud when I think of the weekends pre-kids at the cottage and feeling like I almost had too much time on my hands or feeling bored!  Now, the more relaxed pace is so welcome and I look forward to many more times spent there.

momstown Oakville: Recipes for perfect bubbles

With the weather getting warmer and more time being spent outside, I feel like I have to dust off my outdoor play repertoire and get prepared for summer.  The opportunities for things to do outside on a beautiful summer sunny day are endless, and I love that!  It's always nice to add a few new outdoor toys each year, but there are always some tried and true ones as well.  What kid can ever say no to bubbles??

Making your own bubble solution is easy.  The secret ingredient seems to be glycerin which can be found at most pharmacies, but corn syrup or sugar will also produce a great result.

Here are a few recipes to get you started.

Corn Syrup Bubbles
11 Cups Water
4 Cups Ajax dish soap (anti-bacterial works best)
1 Cup corn syrup

Glycerin Bubbles
2/3 cup Joy dishwashing soap
1 gallon water
2 to 3 tablespoons of glycerin (available in pharmacies or chemical supply houses)

Sugar Bubbles
1/2 cup of dishwashing liquid (Dawn or Joy)
2 cups of water
2 teaspoons of sugar
*you can add a few drops of food colouring to this recipe, but then the bubble solutions should be used outdoors only.

Whether you blow bubbles the old fashion way or have a fancy bubble machine, bubbles are one outdoor activity that amuses kids (and parents!) of all ages.

momstown music with Suzy Sunshine!

This is one of my favorite monthly events with momstown Oakville. Oakville moms and kids all love Suzy Sunshine and the energy and smiles she brings to the room!

I also love how inclusive the music class can be for moms with kids of ALL Ages.

Today I took an extra moment to look around the room, and note what a wide age range we had in attendance.

The amazing this was that each and every child in that room was getting something unique from the class. The babies were truly enjoying the activity, sounds, and shakers. The toddlers were bouncing and dancing to the beat, and some of the older kids had learned the lyrics to some of the songs through repetition and rhythm!

Thank you Suzy Sunshine for bringing such a wonderful music program to momstown and to Canlan Ice Sports for letting us use their fabulous birthday party room! Music is something our children will take with them for years to come.

Earth Day Activities in Oakville

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd every year.  This will be our 40th Earth Day Celebration!  I remember always looking forward to Earth Day as a kid because we usually got to do some fun activity outside and I liked learning about how we can keep the earth a little bit cleaner.

Oakville has a few things going on to help raise awareness and celebrate Earth Day this year.
  • On April 21, the Oakville Community Centre will be hosting their 21st annual Earth Week Clean Up of Nature Sites.  They have 33 sites throughout Oakville that they are aiming to clean up.
  • On April 22, the Town of Oakville will be hosting a free celebration at Town Hall.  There will be a workshop on cooking local food, an Earth Day cake cutting with Mayor Rob Burton, some hands on demos and chances to win great prizes such as a rain barrel or a solar charger!
And of course, you can always do your own neighbourhood or park clean up or take the time to plant some new flowers or trees.

There are some great indoor ways to celebrate Earth Day too!  Check out these fun arts and crafts ideas.

And don't forget Earth Day snacks too!

I think it's great that Earth Day has grown from one day to generally being recognized for a least an entire week.  It's wonderful to see kids take pride in Earth Day and show real interest in making sure our planet is in tip top shape for many centuries to come!

momstown Oakville: Stumped for side dishes?

I like to cook and I like trying new recipes.  I find I focus on trying new main dish recipes though and often turn to the same old favourites for side dishes.  We eat a lot of green salad in our house!  That's not a bad thing, but I'm ready to spruce up our plates and see if we can add some new compliments to some of our favourite main dishes.

I have recently started making big batches of rice that we can use as side dishes for dinner, lunch or a quick snack and that has really helped in being organized in the kitchen for the week.  With that in mind, here are a few new, kid friendly and quick side dishes that can be made in large batches that I'm going to try and wanted to share the recipes.

Quinoa Tabouli Salad (click for recipe)

I love quinoa and when it's made up with flavours like this its hard for anyone to resist. We just tell the kids its rice (which they love) and down goes the quinoa!

Spiced Chickpea and Zucchini Saute (recipe courtesy of Martha Stewart)

Coarse salt and ground pepper

Cover skillet; simmer mixture over medium-high heat, stirring, until zucchini is tender, 10 to 12 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, as desired, and serve.

Easy Peasy Orzo Salad (courtesy of Janet and Greta)

Dressing
1/3 cup reduced-fat bottled Italian dressing
1 tbsp each balsamic vinegar and freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 tsp honey
1 tsp Dijon mustard

Salad
2 cups uncooked orzo (rice-shaped pasta)
1 cup quartered grape tomatoes
1 cup peeled and diced cucumber
½ cup diced orange or yellow bell pepper
½ cup chopped green onions
½ cup frozen green peas, thawed
½ cup crumbled light feta cheese (2 oz/57 g)
¼ cup chopped black olives (optional)
2 to 3 tbsp minced fresh mint leaves (optional) - you could use basil instead
¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper

To make dressing, whisk together all dressing ingredients in a small bowl. Set aside.

Cook orzo according to package directions. Drain. Rinse with cold water and drain again. Mix together orzo and all remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Add dressing and toss to coat salad. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for several hours or overnight before serving.  Makes 6 servings.

Tales for Tots - I Am Small

It was a blustery morning in Oakville but we had lots of members out to our Tales for Tots program this morning.  We enjoyed some snacks, some playtime, some crafts and our Scholastic Book of the Month, I Am Small by Emma Dodd.

Our theme this month is baby animals and so our crafts were making a baby chick and a bunny.  We got creative with glitter glue, crayons and cotton balls!

After we finished our creative projects, it was time to read.

I am Small has wonderful illustrations and uses different textures and materials to really bring the book alive.  Every month at our Tales for Tots program we give away our Scholastic Book of the month and today's lucky winner was Sarah!  Congratulations Sarah!

Hey Oakville Moms...Did you know?

Sometimes it's hard to explain to Oakville moms what an amazing resource momstown is.  Not because its weird or complicated or exclusive, but just because there is so much more to us than people think!  After speaking to some friends the other day, I was inspired to write the top 10 things you probably don't know about momstown.  Feel free to comment on this post and tell me what your score was...how many of these things did you already know?

Counting down (just like Dave Letterman!)...

10.  momstown is a National company with chapters in 20 different cities across the country and still growing at a rapid pace!

9.  Not only does each chapter have their own blog, but momstown.ca has four amazing blogs that are constantly updated with valuable information for you and your family.

8.  momstown has amazing contests every month, both from the main website and at the local chapter level.  Just this month alone you can enter to win a Imaginext Mega T-Rex from Fisher Price, a gardener's dream gift basket, a healthy happy baby package, a Men's care package from Dove, an Earth Day prize pack and a $100 Indigo gift card.

7.  momstown is going to be 5 years old in August! Stay tuned for details about our birthday party!

6. momstown founder, Ann-Marie Burton, is a Wilfrid Laurier University Alumnus.  I know, I know, this isn't really a momstown fact, but I am a Golden Hawk alumnus too so I thought I'd just throw it in here.

5. momstown has a teacher developed curriculum that is woven into our programs and events.  We have 6 program pillars that guide our programming.  We have a focus on early education and early literacy.

4. momstown was recently part of an independent research study by the University of Waterloo.  Their findings were overwhelmingly positive and specifically point out how momstown's unique model of online and in person support was key in helping the mental health of mothers.

2. Although there is a $45 annual fee to join a momstown chapter, once most people discover what is offered through momstown, they can't believe that it is ONLY $45 a year

Our hunters were of all ages, from a few weeks old to 9 years old - its a great event for the whole family.  We loved seeing all the Easter baskets and bunny ears!

After they collected their eggs, the hunters traded them in for a loot bag and a chance to win our Easter Raffle prize.  Congratulations to Laura, our raffle prize winner!

momstown Oakville: What's for Dinner?

I seem to always be wondering what to cook! I also seem to constantly be struggling with my 5pm chaos! Kids are hungry, and tired from a busy day, and I'm trying to figure out what to make for dinner. I have done well with meal planning, so i usually have what I need on hand. I do struggle often with the meal preparation.
Momstown has helped me solve this problem, and I still feel like I'm feeding my family a healthly meal! We hosted our first BIG COOK! What a successful event. We had a great turnout, and so many awesome meals. Each member who participated brought 3 freezer meals - all prepped and ready to go. Everyone went home with 3 great meals for the freezer. All we have to do is defrost and put the meal into the slow cooker or oven! So easy! I can't wait until the next Big Cook!
Here's a few of our prepped meals, all ready to go!

This has been a popular event across many momstown chapters - there are also some great recipe ideas on momstown meals. Check out some of their blogs, for some great ideas - Burlington, Edmonton, and so many more!

Alphabet Play - B is for bunny!

Yesterday we got together for our Alphabet Play program, this program is great for kids of all ages!  Even new moms can bring their wee babes to hear the stories we read and the songs we sing.  Focusing on the letter "B" we talked bunnies, balloons, birthdays and barnyard animals!  After bee and bunny rhymes and everyone’s favourite Sleeping Bunnies song it was time to become official bunnies. Everyone made their own set of bunny ears.

Thank you to Sherri from Circle Time Parties for helping us learn all about the letter "B"!

Alphabet Play happens monthly at momstown Oakville, and is one of the top ten programs developed out of our program pillars which defines the curriculum we deliver on a monthly basis.  We've got plenty to keep you busy whether your a new mom or a mom with toddlers or preschoolers - or all of those!  Join us for a free trial to see why momstown is more than moms just getting together.

Our little Easter bunnies are now ready for our Easter Egg Hunt!  "C" you next time!
