Easy DIY Teacher Gifts

The school year is quickly coming to a close which means that gifts for teachers is a hot topic!  momstown has some great gift ideas you can purchase, but I also wanted to highlight a few things that you can make for those DIY loving mamas.

1.  Pencil/Marker Vase

Here are the steps to make this gift:

-Find a cylinder vase that is about the same height as the markers or pencils you will be using to surround the vase.
-Choose something that will tie all the pencils/markers to the vase.
-Cut out a circle shape from a sturdy piece of cardboard that will cover the base of the vase and the pencils (you are creating a base so the pencils/markers) don't slip down.
-Tie the ribbon (or rope or tape measure) around the vase loosely and then start standing up the pencils or markers around the vase.
-Once the vase is surrounded, tie the ribbon tightly.  You may need a few small pieces of clear tape to keep the ribbon secure.
-Add the water and flowers
-You could also slip a gift card into the ribbon or tie a card to the ribbon that had a gift card inside

2.  Framed Crayon Letters

Here are the steps to make this gift:

-Buy an 8 X 10 shadow box, white card stock and a box of crayons
-Print the first initial of the teacher's name in Century Gothic font so that it takes up almost the entire page.  Choose the font colour to be light grey so you can use the print out as an outline for the crayons but not so dark that it will stand out.  Choose a fancy cursive font and type out the teacher's name at the bottom.
-Print two copies, one to practice with and use to help cut the crayons and one to use to make the gift
-Cut the crayons in the sizes you need using a paring knife.  There will be bits of crayon floating around as you cut the crayons...best to blow those bits away instead of using your hand to wipe them away so they don't smudge colour on your page.
-Secure the cut crayons in place using white glue.
-Once it has dried (overnight is best), insert the page into the shadow box and voila!

Oakville's First Dishcrawl: Discovering Downtown Oakville Restaurants

Last night I had the pleasure of participating in Oakville's first Dishcrawl event.  If you haven't heard about Dishcrawls yet, essentially the event mimics a pub crawl but instead of drinks, you indulge in food from four different restaurants.  In one night you get to explore four restaurants and sample a few dishes from each. At a cost of only $60 per person, I think its a fantastic deal.  Last nights Oakville Dishcrawl event featured four downtown Oakville establishments on Trafalgar Road or Lakeshore Road.  Lucky for me, all the restaurants we visited last night were places I had not been before, so I was thrilled to get a chance to try so many new places.

Stop #1: Southside Cottage Grill

We were greeted warmly by both the Dishcrawl Oakville ambassador, Vanessa, and by the owners of the restaurant.  Each table received some of Southside Cottage Grill's signature hot sauce that we could add to the food we would be tasting - chicken fingers, a pulled pork sandwich (one of their specialties) and a potato skin topped with a tomato mix and drizzled with avocado sauce.  All the food was very good, the pulled pork sandwich was definitely my favourite and several people at my table were raving about the hot sauce (which you can buy to take home with you!).  I would love to bring my kids back here to grab a bite to eat or meet here with friends.  The atmosphere was great, the restaurant is much bigger on the inside than it looks like from the street and the owners were genuine hosts. They are also very gluten free friendly!

We got our first notice that we'd be up and moving shortly and it was fun to see the group heading as a pack to our next culinary destination.

Stop #2:  EE Sushi.

The plate they served Dishcrawlers was very colourful and had lots of different options to taste.  We got a salmon appetizer and a plate of sushi which included vegetable rolls and handrolls.  My favourite was the roll topped with mango and my friend was a big fan of the tempura shrimp. They have a very large menu including not only sushi but noodles and fried rice options too.

Stop #3:  Julia's Ristorante

This restaurant has been a long standing Oakville regular hot spot for the past 10 years.  Head Chef Carl came out to greet the group and let us know that they are launching a new menu.  He then explained what we would be eating and provided us with a plate that included a crab cake, a turkey burrito (my favourite at this stop) and duck breast.  The restaurant has vibrant decor and great music to create a fun and exciting atmosphere.

Just when we were all talking about how full we were getting, we moved on to our final stop.  It was almost as if they read our mind as instead of sitting down to eat as we had a the other locations, the presented us with a nicely displayed table of their blonde roast coffee and some tasty treats to take home with us.  I grabbed the box that contained a chocolate croissant and a small slice of New York cheesecake and my friend decided to try the gluten free chocolate torte.  We decided to sit down and enjoy the atmosphere and tasted both desserts - big thumbs up.  Many of the other Dishcrawlers elected to move outside and enjoy their great patio space.  Marilyn Monroe Cafe has free wifi and lots of space to sit with friends or to grab a table and do some work or have a meeting.  Their pastry display case was really impressive too!  I have been meaning to go into this place for awhile and will definitely be back again.

Marilyn Monroe Cafe's Pastry Case

I would certainly recommend attending a Dishcrawl Oakville event.  It really is a great way to get to know more local restaurants in your community, taste some foods that may be outside of your normal favourites and visit restaurants that you may not have been to before.  The next Dishcrawl Oakville event is slated for July 9th so make sure you check in with their website to get the details and get your tickets!

I feel like choir is another home, we are all like one big, happy family. Whenever a concert starts, I’m always nervous, but when I get up I just sing and I’m always then relaxed because I know that I have another 40 friends to back me up."

"Singing in performances has given me more self-confidence because you get used to being in front of large crowds and doing your best performances. Being in the Senior Choir has helped me create very special bonds and friendships with other choristers, especially when we went on retreat to Albion Hills. It was very special for me when we sang Give us hope for the PACT Urban Peace program. It really feels good to know that you are helping out in the community."

Take Learning On The Road This Summer

Summer can be an exciting time for both parents and students, but can also cause parents to worry about their child forgetting some of what they have learned, or not being prepared enough for the upcoming school year. Sylvan Learning, the leading provider of tutoring to students of all ages, grades and skill levels, believes that by making daily activities fun, and incorporating learning into these activities, the lessons children have learned throughout the school year will be reinforced, making students better prepared for their next school year.

We think that time in the car getting to a field trip destination, or to the location of another summer adventure, creates the perfect opportunity for some fun summer learning. Using simple items that are inexpensive or can be found around the house you can create your own educational car pack! We've suggested some simple ideas to create an activity pack for the car, which is sure to inspire learning and fun on a drive of any length.

Car Pack

The first step is to determine and collect the best items to include in the activity pack. For example, we suggest the following items:

1. Having maps, books, and other reading materials in each car is a must. Maps are great for sneaking in math on trips. Ask children to look at them and determine the distance from home to their destination, how long will it take to get there if you travel the speed limit, or to find the most direct route versus what the most scenic route and have them explain their answers. These activities will also give them practice reading and help them learn geography as they encounter the names of cities and roads on their chosen route.

Books of various kinds (fiction, non-fiction on topics they enjoy, and even comic books) or other reading materials are great ways to keep children occupied on long trips. While they are reading they are not only keeping busy, but also being exposed to new words and how to spell them, new genres, new ideas or facts, and gaining inspiration for any future writing or art of their own.

2. Sylvan Learning also suggests (particularly for those who suffer motion sickness in the car) keeping educational CDs, (or MP3 tracks) handy in the car. Books-on-CD from the library or bookstore, a recording of your child or you reading a book, or educational recordings such as those filled with fun songs teaching math or spelling skills are all great ways to pass the time and reinforce literacy and math concepts. Use a CD to practice math facts and set a goal for the trip (ex. on the way to your destination we’ll practice 4x table and on the way home we’ll work on 6x).

3. Having pens, pencils, drawing utensils, paper, and a small solid surface like a clip-board can be great for turning potential crankiness into creativity. With these items, children can keep track of the cool things they see from the windows, create a vocabulary list of all the new words they have learned on the trip, find writing prompts for later, or write a story during the journey. The possibilities with writing or drawing utensils and paper in a car are endless: children can create tongue-twisters for everyone to attempt, play word games (such as choosing a letter and writing down how many things they see out the window starting with that letter), or write a journal entry describing the things they see, have done so far on the trip, or are excited to do. They can also draw pictures based on these new words, sights, or tongue twisters, not only reinforcing their learning, but also creating great artwork by which to remember the trip later.

4. The last items we suggest adding are any that you feel will help augment these activities, or activities of your own, for your children. For example, binoculars are a fun way to spot distant signs, watches or stopwatches can help them learn to keep track of and calculate time, and any favourite activity booklet of your child’s can help make any road trip a beneficial, educational success for your family.

We also highly recommend a trip to your local discount store to peruse their word puzzle books and activity book section as there are often great gems to be found at reasonable prices. The novelty of having a new book can be enough incentive for even the most reluctant of children to give it a try.

Once you have gathered all these items, the second step for creating the activity pack is to find a fun box or case to put these items in. You and your family can even decorate the case yourselves! Once it is decorated and all the items are put inside, the pack should be placed somewhere in the car where it is easily seen and accessible to both parents and children, allowing its contents to always be an option.

The third and final step for the activity pack is to follow through on using it, and through its use determine what works and what doesn’t for your family, adding or taking away items over time, customizing it to what works best for your family. Finally, the last part of this final step is to enjoy the activity pack!

For more information and tips on how to make learning a part of everyday summer life and to learn more about our summer and school year programs, see Sylvan Learning’s blog, Facebook page or follow us on Twitter.

Where do you find inspiration?

This morning I am hitting road and heading north to Fern Resort in Orillia for the momstown National Spring conference.  The entire momstown team (that's 25+ people!) will be together for four days to brainstorm, plan, work and learn and come back to our respective communities ready to elevate our businesses yet again.

These bi-annual conferences always get me thinking about inspiration.  Where do you find inspiration?  What motivates and inspires you to try something new, push yourself beyond your limits and reach your goals?  I am lucky that being a part of the momstown team allows me to find inspiration from so many amazing women each and every day!  When I think about all the other momstown chapter owners, there is not one person that doesn't come to my mind when I need a dose of inspiration.  Whether they have overcome personal challenges, continually taken risks and tried new things or achieved personal milestones while trying to balance the growth of their business, there is no shortage of impressive things happening among the momstown team.

Since our conference last May, everyone single momstown team member has huge accomplishments to be proud of.  And so this afternoon, when I sit in a room filled with women who have grown and flourished over the last 12 months, I feel pretty lucky to only have to turn my head in any direction to feel inspired, proud and motivated to continue to push on towards the big goals I have for myself and my business.

Alphabet Play Program for Oakville Kids - The Letter 'O'

momstown Oakville's May Alphabet Play event was all about the letter 'O'!  We had a great session at the Oakville Soccer Club today and explore all the things Oakville moms and kids had brought that started with O.  Then we sang "Old Macdonald Has A Farm" and "If You're Happy and You Know It" using actions for things that start with O.  Our letter 'O' craft was making an octopus so to get us into a sea-like mood we read "Into the A B Sea" and "Commotion in the Ocean".  Each child got to make their own octopus using a paper plate, ribbons and little 'o' shaped stickers.  To make your own octopus craft, draw a face on the paper plate, cut ribbons/streamers into 8 legs, glue them around the plate, and then make suction cups on our legs using the o stickers.

The grand finale was when we talked about 'o' being for orchestra and made a marching orchestra, using shakers and bells and we used the tapping sticks to practice tapping to the beat and going fast, slow, loud and quiet.

For the month June we will learn all about the letter 'P'.  Come on out and join our early literacy programs, click here to sign up and get in on the fun!  Did you know that when you buy a one year momstown membership you also get a 12 month subscription to Today's Parent magazine?  No better time to become a member!

How To Get Rid Of Ants In Your House

The momstown Oakville message board has many Oakville moms complaining about ants coming into their kitchens, bathrooms, etc.  You can always call a professional to come in and take care of the problem but if you don't want to spend a lot of money and want something that you can use year after year, here are a few easy remedies that should keep the ants out of your house!

Rumoured To Be Most Effective To Keep Ants Out:
Mix of 1 cup of water, 5 Tbsp of sugar and 1/2 Tbsp of Borax (can buy this at most grocery stores) and leave it on the floor for them to drink. They'll bring it to their nest and will get rid of all of them in a day.  Put this mixture where the ants are seen inside your house and also outside the house by any doors you think they may be using to get in.  This mixture is toxic so make sure it is out of reach to kids and pets.

Other Ideas:

1.  Vacuum up some baby powder (which they find toxic) and then vaccum up the group or trail of ants.

2.  Make a mixture of rubbing alcohol, dish soap and water. Get a spray bottle, making sure to wash it out very well, and place about a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol and about a teaspoon and a half of dish soap. Then fill the spray bottle with water about an inch away from the top and close it up tight. Shake the solution until bubbles start to appear and then you're ready to spray! Because of the alcohol in the solution, the ants will stay clear away from it.  Spray this over thresholds and window sills.  You can leave small amounts of this solution in bottle caps around the areas where ants were seen.

3.  Leave out some cornmeal in bottle caps or on small pieces of tin foil.   Ants eat it and after consuming water, the cornmeal swells inside their digestive organs, killing the ants.  This is a non toxic solution.

4.  Apply scents and substances that ants don't like. Vinegar, peppermint oil, cinnamon, black pepper, cayenne pepper, whole cloves, and bay leaves are all examples that have varying claims of success by sprinkling one of these options across door thresholds or entry ways.

And to be proactive, make sure you aren't leaving any food out on the counter (even crumbs) or dirty dishes in the sink and wipe out the kitchen sink too.  If you have pet food on the floor, put the food bowl in a larger dish with some water in it, creating a moat around the pet food that ants won't cross.

There are many great things about the Spring and Summer seasons but ants in the house isn't one of them!  If you have any other tried and true methods, leave us a comment and let us know.  Good luck to all those trying to get rid of ants, hopefully you find something from this list that works for you.

May Tales for Tots - Early Literacy Program for Oakville Moms and Kids

momstown Oakville moms and kids gathered at The Little Gym for our monthly early literacy program sponsored by Scholastic Canada.  This month's Tales for Tots book was called 'Split! Splat! by Amy Gibson. The book went very well with our theme for May which was all about getting wet, wet, wet!  And as much fun as water can be, the best way to keep dry is to make sure you have an umbrella so the kids made their own!

Here is what you need to make these cute umbrellas:

-Coloured foam for the umbrella base
-A pipe cleaner for the handle
-Plenty of sticker shapes, pom poms or whatever you have on hand to jazz them up!
-Glue stick
-Tape to keep the handle in place

Congratulations Alex!

We admired our creations during snack time and then read 'Spilt! Splat! which is a really great story about celebrating and enjoying a rainy day.  As always at our Tales for Tots program, we gave away a copy of the book and Alex was our proud winner this month-congratulations Alex!  The kids also enjoyed some free play time which allows Oakville moms a good chance to connect and chat.  We'd love to have you join us next time!

Oakville Moms Get Their Game On With A Mattel Games Night!

I have lots of fond memories playing board games and card games.  And when we posted a Moms Night Out Game Night on the momstown Oakville calendar, others must have similar memories to me as we had many moms anxious to get playing!

We were lucky to have Mattel Game On send us several games to choose from -  Mad Gab, Apples to Apples, Blockus, Uno Power and Angry Birds as well as some dice games, which would be really great for travel.  Not familiar with these games?  Make sure you check out Mattel's new Gameology App that will help you find the perfect game to fit your gaming style.  Are you an Activus, a Socialies, a Wittian or a Strategicorn, click here to find out!

As we opened the games and started to play, it was fun to hear everyone's stories about family games nights or memories of games they liked to play as kids or up at the cottage.  Playing board games or card games is a really fun way to spend an evening!

My favourite part of this event was how much laughter there was!  Good for the soul for sure.  How can you not laugh playing Mad Gabs and trying to figure out what  'Abe Lackey Leg Tricked Host Her' is supposed to be?  We also had a blast playing Apples to Apples...from Norman Rockwell to Salsa Dancing to Rust...how can all these things be part of the same game??  Well that is just part of what makes it so fun to play!

Starting the love of games early with this little one!

Thanks to all the momstown Oakville moms who came out to play last night.  By the end of the night, we were already picking what games we would play for the next Games Night!  We ended the event by giving away a few games so that the fun can continue at home.  Don't worry, if you didn't join us last night, you still have a chance to win some fabulous games as we're giving away a Mattel Game On prize pack - enter here!

And We're Out Of The Baby Phase?!

I had a lovely Mother's Day weekend complete with a pedicure, a delicious breakfast, a spin class and some adorable hand made gifts from my kids.  This was my fourth Mother's Day and as I reflected on motherhood in general, I was left with the realization that we seem to be all of a sudden out of the baby phase?!

I know its not really 'all of a sudden', my youngest is two and it did take two years for her to get there of course, but lately my baby days seem to be far behind me.  I just bought the sheets that will go on my daughter's big girl bed and we will soon be moving the crib out into the garage and trying to figure out what to do with it.  I will be sad when we move it out, but am also really happy - we finally feel like we're not in crisis mode all the time!  I use the word 'crisis' with humour - we were never really in crisis.  But the sleepless nights, the nap time/feeding time routines are behind us, in fact, most of the time I don't even take a diaper bag out with me anymore as the list of what we need to leave the house has gotten a lot smaller.  Both kids can drink from cups, sit in regular chairs and eat regular foods, etc.

No more diaper bag!

We are also having a lot of fun!  Babies are cute, don't get me wrong, but kids are fun!  I love playing games with them, watching their creativity and their interests develop.  I love seeing them develop real friendships, ask questions and be curious about the world around them.  There are also a lot more things that we can do together, which I love.

And there there is the perk of feeling a bit more like myself.  While my kids are always on my mind and by no means self sufficient yet (when does that happen?  8 or 10 years old?) I do feel like I can focus a bit more on me and things that I used to have more time for.

I will miss my babies being babies (although getting a new niece at the end of July will satisfy my need for baby sweetness) but am also looking forward to a great summer!  Last summer we seemed to be divided a lot as my daughter was still having two naps so my husband was out and about with my son and I stayed close to home with her.  This summer, we are ready to explore all kinds of adventures as a family and I can't wait!

Decadent Cookie Dough Dip Recipe

Last week I attended a pampered chef party hosted by a momstown Oakville member.  In addition to it being a very fun night out, there were also some delicious snacks to enjoy.  One that got my attention, as I hadn't seen anything like it before, was Cookie Dough Dip!  Sound decadent?  It is!  But its perfect for a party and will absolutely be a crowd pleaser.

Decadent Cookie Dough Dip Recipe

4 oz. Cream Cheese, softened
1/4 cup Butter, softened
1/2 cup Creamy Peanut Butter (or Sunbutter or WOW butter for a nut-free version)
1/2 cup Powdered Sugar
1.5 Tbsp. Brown Sugar
1/2 tsp. Vanilla
1/2 cup Oats (regular or quick)
1/2 cup Plain regular or mini sized M&Ms
1/2 cup Miniature Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

Mix cream cheese, butter, vanilla and peanut butter until smooth.  Stir in brown sugar and powdered sugar, mixing well. Next fold in oats, M&Ms and chocolate chips.

Serve with something sturdy to scoop the dip like graham crackers, pretzels or pita chips.  This recipe is easily doubled if you have a large crowd.

Being a momstown member gets you to try new things

Last month momstown Oakville's crafty mama event was card making.  While I do consider myself pretty crafty, I had never made cards before but had been the recipient of some home made cards (which were really lovely) and wanted to try my hand at making my own.  I often hear from members that one of the many benefits they enjoy as a  momstown member is the opportunity to try new things or visit new places that they would not have done on their own.  This is exactly what this card making night was for me!

One of our momstown Oakville member, is a Stampin' Up representative and brought all of our supplies for easy assembly.  Each of us made 10 cards to take home.

Lots of tools to make our cards!

We had a mock up card for each type we were trying to make which I found really helpful.  And while we were following a template, there was still lots of opportunity to make the cards your own by choosing the stamp you used (happy birthday, thank you or something more generic like 'smile').  I have to say that I was really happy with how my cards turned out!

My first attempt at card making!

We had a great group for our crafty mama night.  Add in some snacks, drinks, good conversation and it was a fun way to pass an evening!  I will definitely be adding another card making night to the calendar again soon.  I love that I now have a supply of beautiful cards to use for many occasions.

As always, new members are welcome so register here to join us next time!  All  one year memberships purchased in 2013 also receive a Today's Parent magazine subscription for 12 months!

Science for Preschoolers With Magnets

In April the momstown Oakville Little Scientist program for toddlers and preschoolers explored our theme of the month (Little Explorers) using magnets.  First we investigated a whole tray of objects and tested out whether each one stuck to our magnet wands or not.  Our scientists sorted them into two piles - magnetic (which we discovered were all made of metal) and non-magnetic (made of things like cloth or rock or elastic or plastic).

Then we made some caterpillars dance!  Using glass jars with little bits of pipe cleaners, we waved our magnet wands around the jars, the pipe cleaner bits or "caterpillars" moved around the jar. momstown Oakville kids even did some magnetic painting!  Each child got a paper plate filled with a blob of yellow, blue and red paint.  We placed a paper clip on our plate, and then used our magnet under the plate to move the paper clip around, through the paint and all over the plate.  The colours all mixed and we made green, orange and purple and our plates looked like beautiful works of art!

Finally we played with 5 different magnetic toys - a magnetic bar and ball set which we used to build towers and shapes, a magnetic person with magnetic clothes that we could change, a fishing puzzle with a magnetic fishing rod and magnetic fish pieces, magnetic vehicles that we zoomed all over a metal baking tray, and plastic fish that we turned magnetic by using a paper clip which we could "fish" for using our magnet wand.

What a fantastic time experimenting with magnets!  Little Scientists is just one of our Top 10 momstown programs.  Sign up for your free momstown Oakville trial today and learn more about our 40+ monthly events, message board, member discounts and more!
