We moved to Oakville a couple of years ago to be closer to family and it’s days like this that make me so happy we did!
I do struggle with the gardening, and it’s left mainly neglected. We do however have a pool house with 2 small window boxes that my mom (Nana) can’t ignore. She has made it her spring tradition to take my girls to the garden store and work with them to create gardening masterpieces in these little window boxes. My girls really look forward to this time with Nana, and talk for days about their plans for pink, purple and yellow flowers. Nana is very patient at the store guiding them to the right choices, and then the work begins! Everyone loves to dig in the dirt, take turns watering, and digging little spaces in the window boxes for their flowers. They spend a lot of time learning from Nana, and enjoying their time with her. They also enjoy the novelty of a “special” activity with Nana, as this is not something mommy would do!
As a stay at home mom, I spend A LOT of time with my kids. I
love watching them learn new things, and I love being the one to teach them. But, I also realize how important it is that my kids spend time learning from others in the family and spending quality time with them.
I also used to worry that being home with my kids my likes (and dislikes) would influence their interests too much. They need to be exposed to so many opportunities to truly find their own interests. I love that time with Nana provides them with the opportunities to explore in ways they can’t with mommy. If they only followed what I did, they would never learn about gardening! My girls are so excited when the work is done, and so proud to show anyone who visits our backyard.
So, I’m grateful to Nana for teaching my kids something I just can’t, for spending time with them creating a memory I know they will remember, and for making my flower boxes look so pretty! I’m always hopeful too, that the green thumb skips a generation! Maybe Nana is training a new gardener for the family?

So cute! What a treat to have Nana so close! I agree, it's great for kids to have other influences than their parents (great as we are - ha!)
