Our sommelier, Angelo, was a perfect mix between instructional and fun. Our theme was Old World versus New World wines. We tested five wines, two white and three red.
I am a wine drinker and have been to tastings before, but I learned a few new things that I thought I would share.
Old world wines are named after the region in which the grapes were grown. The region is the star. New world wines are named after the wine maker. The wine maker is the star. Old world wines have more limits on how they can be made, you can only use certain grapes in certain regions while the new world wines contain a higher level of creativity.
New world wines also tend to have stronger, more abrasive flavours - they really grab you! While old world wines can be a bit more subtle and earthy.
It was interesting to see the favourites among our group, some people liked the old world wines better and some preferred the new wines. Angelo was quick to point out that we were all right and its really about what you like.
We ended the night with a goody bag for everyone filled with some treats to pamper the moms for Mother's Day. Thanks to Audrey from Norwex, Enza Day Spa, Party Monsters Invitations and More, Cupid's Cupcakes and Forest of Flowers on Trafalgar!
