Easy Bird Seed Recipe To Make With Kids

Earlier this week momstown Oakville moms and kids got together for our monthly Junior Scientist program and made bird seed cookies.  Before we got started, we had a look out the window at the birds eating seed in the backyard bird feeder and talked about how it's going to start getting colder and harder for birdies to find food, so we wanted them to have some yummy cookies to eat.

We all took turns adding the ingredients and mixing them up in the bowl.  Here is the recipe we used:

1/2 C. water
1 envelope unflavoured gelatin
3/4 C. flour
3 TBS honey
4 cups of bird seed

We stirred it up until it was well mixed and then finally, we added the bird seed.

After lots of stirring, we sprayed a cookie sheet with non stick cooking spray and poured the seed mixture out onto the sheet.  This is where we got to get gooey!  We used our fingers to press the mixture down flat on the sheet, then we used cookie cutters in different shapes to cut out cookies.  We transferred them carefully with a spatula to a plate to dry, and then used a straw to make a little hole in the top of the bird cookie.

Then came the hard part - waiting patiently for them to dry!  That takes about 2 days.  Once they are dry, string twine through the hole.  Each Junior Scientist went home with the cookies they just made, as well as some that had been made earlier in the week and were all dry and ready to hang up once they got home.  We hung our dry ones in the backyard and were happy to sit outside during the warm, sunny afternoon and listen to the birds chirping and watch them happily enjoying their yummy cookies.

Next month we'll be exploring the science of sound!  Interested in joining us?  Purchase your momstown Oakville membership here or sign up for a 4 week free trial.
