How to make cloud dough

Our momstown Oakville Little Scientists got together today to make Cloud Dough.  This is a great sensory activity that allows the kids to mix the dough up themselves.  I would definitely recommend that this be made outdoors only as it is pretty messy, but that's half the fun, right?

Each of our Little Scientists had the following to make their Cloud Dough:

3.5 cups of all purpose flour
1/2 cup baby oil
A variety of sparkles

And of course we had Huggies Simply Clean wipes to help with the mess!

The kids got right to work measuring the flour.

Then stirred it up after they added the baby oil...

And the final touch, adding sparkles!

Playing with this dough actually makes your hands very soft, thanks to the baby oil.  But to get the excess dough off we relied on Huggies Simply Clean wipes to clean hands.

Cloud Dough has a really nice consistency, very smooth and fun to play with.  The kids made shapes and mountains and balls with the dough and it even packs up nicely into a container to be used again another time.

momstown Oakville's Baby Basics Program

momstown Oakville runs a weekly Baby Basics program for moms with babies 0-12 months.  The group meets every Monday at ellephysio.  The focus of the group is to help moms connect with other moms who have babies in their community and to learn about resources and information available to them.  We regularly have speakers from the community who cover topics such as early literacy, health for mom and baby, fitness and the ever important sleep!

When I joined momstown Oakville three years ago, the Baby Basics group was the first thing I attended and became a staple for me each week.  I specifically remember a time when I'd had a rough night with my son and was so thankful that I had my baby group the next day!  Throwing on clothes probably from the day before and grabbing a latte on the way, I breezed into the room with dark circles under my eyes.  Why did I still want to go to the program so badly?  Because once I got there I immediately felt better.  I got sincere sympathy and empathy.  I heard stories of how that was them last week or how they just got through teething or a cold.  Finding support from other moms who were going through what I was going through was invaluable.  I am still in contact with several of the moms I met through that group and all of us now have a second child born around the same time which is pretty cool.

Over the last few months, our Baby Basics group has had a wide array of speakers and topics.

How to make your own granola

I love eating greek yogurt and granola for breakfast.  There are tons of granola options in the grocery stores but some of them are full of sugar, some of them actually don't taste all that good, and a lot of them contain nuts.  My son is allergic to some nuts so I figured it would just be easier to try and make my own granola. And I was right!  This recipe is easy to make and inexpensive in comparison to buying a box from the store each week.  I also love that I can customize it and change it up depending on what I have around the house.  I adapted this recipe from Rose Reisman's Family Favourites cookbook.  I usually double this recipe as it's very popular in my house and doesn't last long.  You can freeze the granola for up to 2 months.

What you need:

2 cups large rolled oats
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 and 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
3 tbsp canola oil
1/4 apple juice
3 tbsp pure maple syrup
1/4 cup raisins
1/4 cup dried cranberries, chopped

What you do:

Preheat oven to 300F, line a baking sheet with foil and spray it lightly with cooking spray.
Combine all except the last two ingredients, stirring well to combine.
Spread mixture on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 30-40 minutes, tossing once to prevent burning.
Remove from oven and let cool to room temperature. Add the raisins and cranberries and stir. Store in an air tight container.

I have used dried apricots, dates and dried strawberries before and they all tasted delicious too! If you did want to add nuts to this recipe, add 1/2 cup of whichever nut you like and mix it in the the bulk of the ingredients so they toast up in the oven.

As mentioned, I love this granola with greek yogurt but my kids love it with milk. Also makes a great snack when you are out and about, tastes great all on its own!

My brother, my friend?

I'm not a parenting expert, in fact I'm pretty sure I'd still be considered a newbie parent as my oldest child is just coming up to three and a half.  And in terms of sibling knowledge, my son has only had a sister for the past 15 months.  In that short time though, I have already learned some key things about helping them love, support and appreciate each other.

About a year and a half ago I went to see Barbara Coloroso speak.  We made it a 'girls night out' and my sister, sister in law and I took my Mom as a treat.  Growing up, Barbara Coloroso parenting books could be found dog eared around my house, my Mom is a big believer in her philosophies.  I really enjoyed hearing her speak, she was engaging and funny and her thoughts on parenting resonated with me and just made sense.  I may have been partially biased as I had to smile a few times as she said lines or phrases that I had heard word for word from my Mom!

My daughter in only 15 months old but she already thinks her brother is just about the 'best thing since sliced bread'.  She does what he wants, and listens to him.  The other day he was playing doctor with her and was counting her toes and fingers.  She readily gave him whatever body part he was asking for.  No fear or worry about what he was going to do, just happy that he wanted to play with her.

My son is loving towards his sister most of the time.  He offers her a cracker if he is eating some, brings her a toy if she's crying and tells us we need to go and rescue her when she wakes up from a nap.

Of course it's not all roses!  They fight over toys and our attention.  They get frustrated when they don't get what they want because they have to wait while the other one gets something first.  That's all par for the course.   But I'm already noticing that if we give them some space to work it out on their own...they do!  If my son doesn't want to share something with her, give him 5 minutes and he'll bring it over to her on his own. My daughter is already learning to take turns and will give my son a turn if he asks for it.  It's amazing to watch.

Overall I think parents may be surprised with how siblings can start to work things out on their own given the chance and that letting them try is harder on the parents than it is on the kids.  Your first instinct is to rush in when one of them gets upset or if you hear some unkind words, you immediately want to be the problem solver.  I want my kids to know how to be problem solvers so I'll sit on my hands and perhaps stuff an apple in my mouth to avoid jumping in!

What has a key learning been for me?  That I have to give them the space and the ability to figure out how to co-exist on their own.  The more I referee, the more I feel like they'll think I'm picking sides.  The more I interfere, the less likely they are to come up with a solution that works for them.  They need to learn to respect one another.

What have your key learnings been as you raise siblings?

Picasso at the Park: Gettin' Messy with Mud!

momstown Oakville met at coronation park this morning, for some farm animal fun in the mud!  Our outdoor crafts allow the kids to get messier than indoor crafts.

Everyone brought along a bucket and shovel to make their own mud!  We had pigs that needed to be "painted" and covered in mud!

The kids LOVED mixing their mud - some were right up to their elbows in dirt.  This is also a great sensory experience for the littlest ones.

Momstown Oakville is planning lots of great outdoor messy crafts for the summer!  If you're looking to join us, register for a FREE 4 week trial membership.

Celebrating Canada Day in Oakville

Oakville is ready to celebrate Canada Day 2012 in a big way! Oakville residents are very lucky as we have a terrific, family fun filled, FREE day in Bronte Harbour hosted by the Bronte BIA.

Oakville's Canada Day Festival at Bronte Harbour's Heritage Waterfront Park is the place to be. They have activities going on from 11:30am to 11:00pm which include a reptile show, juggling, live bands, local vendors and a beer & burger garden. And of course, the day would not be complete without fireworks! They show is set to start at 10:15pm. New this year is the opportunity to watch the fireworks and listen to a montage of music on 102.9 K-Lite FM who will be doing a LIVE simulcast.

For a full listing of musical guests, sponsors and further details, click here.
