Musical Fun with the Performace School of Music!

Our momstown moms and kids met a new music teacher this week, and we had a blast!  Miss Lorry from the Performance School of Music and Dance is joining us all summer to run Kindermusik classes for our members.

Our kids got to learn about rhythm and dance.   They also had a chance to explore different instruments.  This class is able to accommodate a wide age range.  We had newborns all the way up to pre-schoolers attend and everyone enjoyed and learned.

We look forward to learning more from Miss Lorry this summer!

A big thanks to Canlan Ice Sports for the use of their space to host the class.

Farm Animal Fun at Junior Chef!

Miss Sherri from Circle Time Parties planned and hosted momstown Oakville's monthly Junior Chef program and we had some great farm animal fun!

Our kids were thrilled to cook together and create the most adorable bunnies.  They tasted great too!

After all the hard work in the kitchen, the kids were up and moving!  We had a circle time with songs, music and storytime all about farm animals.

We have lots more farm animal fun planned for the month of June.  If you're interested in joining momstown Oakville for crafts, fun or Junior Chef, register for a free 4 week trial membership.

A working mama's guide to flexibility

Flex hours, working from home, ample vacation days.  Time to take kids to appointments or leave early to attend Christmas concerts, Mother's Day teas or special outings.  These are all examples of flexibility in the work place.  I think any mama who works for someone else would agree that options like this are key to balancing family and work life.  But it occurred to me the other day that I needed to think bigger picture when it came to career flexibility.

I started working full time after university when I was 22.  I had my first child when I was 30.  Before kids even came into my life, I had tracked 8 solid years in the workforce.  This is very different from our mothers and grandmothers who might have worked a year or two, or perhaps none at all before they had their first child.  According to Statistics Canada, the average age of a first time mom in 1970 was 24.  In 2006 it's listed as 27.5 years and I would say that the age has continued to creep up in the last 6 years and now sits around 29.

By having children later, we have the opportunity to create a solid career foundation before we begin having kids.  When I had my first child I was on my fourth job and had progressed steadily up the corporate ladder. I know that some of my friends have expressed the thought that having amassed some career successes before kids makes it harder to leave the work force and become a stay at home mom for various reasons - used to earning a good income or don't want to loose the progress they have made.  I absolutely see that point of view, especially since there can still be a stigma attached to being a 'homemaker'.

But I think the time I spent in the workforce before kids makes it easier to step out of the work force while my kids are young and will make it easier to step back in when I am ready.

Okay, so back to my point about career flexibility.  Because a lot of us had our kids starting in our early thirties (or later), you could frame your career into BK (before kids) and AK (after kids).  A wise friend pointed out to me that even if I stopped working tomorrow and stayed home for 15 years, I could still have an AK career of 12 years and that's if I wanted to work until I was 60.  I could use flexibility and work a few years less or a few years more depending on what worked for me.  Add the BK career time and I could still work full time for a total of 25 years!  That's a long time!

I guess what I'm saying is to use your creativity to think about your overall career with flexibility.  Flex yourself in with some part time work when your kids are young or flex yourself out completely.  Continue to work full time now and flex yourself out when your kids are in middle school.  The possibilities are endless!

So yes, in the short term hopefully vacation days, working from home and opportunities to leave a little early from time to time can help the working mama balance her life, but broaden the scope and think of the entire trajectory of your working life and use flexibility to craft the career life cycle in whichever way it works for you.

I know its not as easy as I am making it sound.  My point being that if you are struggling to determine what is best for you and your family in terms of working outside the home, working at home, working part time or working at all when you have young children (every mama's conundrum on some level I think), looking at the situation with a wider focus may help in the decision making process.

I'll leave you with an interesting statistic - "Women will create over half of the 9.72 million new small business jobs expected to be created by 2018 and more and more are doing this from home offices" (www.forbes.com).

If you are seeking more flexibility in your work life, would you consider becoming an entrepreneur?  If you could create your ideal work environment or job, what would that be?

Did you know all these things about Oakville's Whole Foods Market?

I don't often use the word 'lovely' to describe things, but in this case I can't think of a better word.  Last night the momstown Oakville mama's gathered at Whole Foods to do a store tour and sample some wine and cheese.  And it was lovely!  A big thank you to France and her team for putting on such a great night.

Not only were we treated to goodie bags (and one lucky member received a $25 gift card), three types of delicious cheese, candied pecans, crackers and three wines to sample, but we all agreed that we learned so much about food in general and about the Whole Foods store and their practices.

Goodie bags with coupons and samples!

Did you know these things about Oakville's Whole Foods Market?

1.  You can find their weekly sale flyer on their website.  A new flyer comes out every Wednesday.
2.  They have a 3 day sale every week in their meat and seafood department (Friday - Sunday).
3.  Their cheese department carries 300 different varieties and also has a 3 day sale each week (Fri - Sun).
4.  Their bakery department does not use preservatives and has a 3 day sale each week (Wed - Friday).
5.  Their snack aisle does not have any items that contain trans fats.
6.  They implemented a color-coded rating program that provides shoppers with sustainability status information for all wild-caught seafood.
7.  They also have a rating system for meat and poultry to let customers know what kind of environment the animals were raised in.  Their meat and poultry is hormone and antibiotic free and only fed vegetable feed.
8.  They sell 8 (yes, 8!) different types of milk from cow's milk to almond milk to flax milk.
9.  They are partnering with the Harbourside Organic Farmers Market which will take place every Saturday morning from 9am to 1pm from June 16 to October 27 at Whole Foods Market in Oakville.
10.  They sell both conventional and organic items, they are not just an organic grocer.

You can visit their website or their Facebook page, or sign up to get the latest store specials by email.

I was so engrossed in the store tour that I forgot to take any pictures!  I was impressed by how important they feel it is and by how hard they try at making the information about the foods they sell very transparent and accessible to shoppers.  They also have information posted all over the store about nutritional values for foods such as the ANDI scores (Aggregate Nutrient Density Index) and have a program called "Heathly Starts Here" that has recipes available which focus on eating unprocessed foods, healthy fats and nutrient dense foods.

After the store tour, we enjoyed our wine and cheese on their licensed patio and chatted until the store closed!

Interesting in joining us for the next mama's night out?  We've got Poker Night, Beach Volleyball, a Favourite Things Exchange, Chakra Balancing and trips to the Driving Range all happening this month!  Sign up for a FREE 4 week trial to join in on all the fun.

Tales for Tots: Farm Animals

We had a great time at momstown Oakville Tales for Tots!  Today was all about farm animals.  Our moms and kids came out for a fun filled morning.  We made farm animal crafts:  paper plate pigs and chicks.  Our kids had a great time cutting and gluing triangles and circles to complete their animals.

After being crafty, we had story time with a book provided by Scholastic Canada:  Old Macdonald Had a Farm Finger Puppet Book.  The book fits an adult hand, and the kids will love to sing along!  At momstown Oakville, our kids were signing, mooing, quacking and having a great time.  It's a perfect soft puppet and board book all in one - great for young babies right through to pre-schoolers!

As always, with Tales for Tots, momstown Oakville is able to give away a copy of the book to a child at our group!

We also had snacks, and loads of play time for the kids to explore, learn and socialize.

This is the perfect time of year to learn about farm animals and we've got lots of Discovery Field Trips to farms in the Halton area on our calendar over the next few months.  Kids love to visit farms!  If you are looking for some farm themed inspiration, check out our momstown arts & crafts blog for lots of great ideas.

We read and share a new book every month at Tales for Tots event at momstown Oakville.  If you are interested in joining us next month, or for any of our other great events, register for a 4 week free trial!

Father's Day in Oakville: Beer!

Wondering what to do on Father's Day this year? I'm pretty sure these events will somehow end up at the top of the list! Every year on Father's Day, the Trafalgar Ales & Meads Brewery and Cameron's Brewing Company host on open house.

Trafalgar Ales & Meads

They offer samples from their entire range of beers and will walk you around the brewery showing you how their process works. There are also some salty snacks and a pig roast and the best part is they make one or two unique beers just for the event. Past years have included flavours like Habenero beer.

Trafalgar Ales & Meads produces an unparalleled selection of unique seasonal beers. Depending on the year, many of the listed products will appear in the LCBO, but Trafalgar’s in-house beer store will always carry them.

Some of their seasonal beers include:
Smoked Oatmeal Stout
Cherry Ale
Maple Bock
Abbey Belgian Ale

While it may be just the Dad's that want to sneak away for this event, it is open to everyone, families included, who want to come in for a visit and learn more about this great local brewery.  The event runs from 1:00pm - 4:00pm, please contact them for more details.

Camerson's Brewing Company

This local brewery will also be firing up the bbq and you can enjoy lunch or early dinner.  There will be a bouncy castle for the kids and a band with live music.  Tours of the brewery are also available as well as contests and cake too!  The event runs from 12:00pm to 5:00pm.

Hillfield Strathallan College: Preparation for a Life-Long Learning Journey

Since 1901, Hillfield Strathallan College has provided young people with extraordinary educational opportunities. One of the key advantages of an education at HSC is the opportunity for students to remain at one campus for their entire educational journey. HSC offers programming starting from the age of three, all the way through to Grade 12.  The College consists of four small schools that are united on one campus, woven together with the commitment to our Mission,Vision and Values. A journey throughout our Junior, Montessori, Middle and Senior Schools includes well planned and purposefully designed programming with integrated support services to ensure student success.

From the first day a student steps foot into any of our four schools, he or she becomes part of a greater community. Each child is known, challenged to do their best, and supported in that pursuit. Students as young as three years of age can take part in our Montessori 3 or Pre-Kindergarten program.

The Montessori Program has been an integral part of HSC since 1967. Our Montessori School is CCMA accredited, upholding the highest standards of an authentic Montessori education. Our classroom teachers hold recognized Montessori teaching certificates from accredited training programs and provide the dynamic link between the prepared environment and the children.

HSC’s Junior School (Grades 4 – 8) is committed to providing students with a learning environment where they feel safe to take risks, grow and learn. During this magical time in a young child’s life, they don’t just take in information, they wonder, explore and discover. When children get up everyday with the knowledge that they are supported and cared for, learning comes naturally.

HSC is a non-profit day school and offers scholarships, financial aid and tuition payment programs.

Students at the College represent a broad spectrum of communities from Mississauga to Brantford. The many communities we service are united through our 25 bus routes. Main-route bus transportation is provided for all full-day students, and is included in annual tuition.

To take a personal tour and experience first-hand our educational centre of excellence, please contact Mrs. Sheila Skinner in the Admissions Department by e mail at sheila.skinner@hsc.onc.ca, or by phone at 905-389-1367, ext. 160.
